film school, phD?

hi everyone, i’m asking this for a friend, please help her, she’s a very pretty girl that tries to get into a good film school, especially in california or nyc. anyone has any good suggestion on any good film school? money is not an issue
thanks

there is no phD in film school - the terminal degree is an mfa. but the top ones are ucla, usc, cal arts, afi, nyu, and columbia. she might research those a bit, as each has a different focus and different strengths depending on her specific interest like acting, directing, screenwriting, etc. good luck :]

that’s flat out wrong. NYU has a phd in cinema studies. brown has a phd in modern culture and media.

etc etc.

However, many communications/film professors teach at R1 institutions with just an MFA.

I think the MFA has more of an applied-studies emphasis than the PhD’s

oh i thought the op was referring to applied film, as in production based film study like directing, producing, screenwriting, since s/he mentioned the words ‘film school.’ those do only offer mfa programs as the terminal degree. if what you are looking for is a theory-based film STUDIES program, ie. cinema studies, modern culture media, then sure, a phD is available. sorry hehe should have made that distinction before. ;]

if money is not an issue than why doesn’t she just take that money and produce her own film?
