I have posted this on a Summer Programs forum, but I thought that this forum gets many more views ![]()
My son, currently a seventh grader, has been into filmmaking big time. He would like to try it this summer, instead of a math camp.
Anyone has any suggestions? He would consider screenwriting classes as well.
Thanks :-)

kelowna, I don’t know anyone as young as your son who has done the NYFA summer program but the older kids I know who have gone have found it enjoyable.

Also, this is a camp that my D attended in her early teens for theatre. She was there for three consecutive summers and adored it. I don’t have any info about their film program but I would imagine that it is equally good.

Edited to add that I just had a look at Centauri’s schedule and every Film session but one is already full!

I found a list of summer camps (including filmmaking) for middle school students. [Performing Art Camps @ KidsCamps.com](<a href=“Performing Art Summer Camps | KidsCamps”>Performing Art Summer Camps | KidsCamps)

This may be a long-shot, but if you PM tsdad he may have some ideas. His son recently won an award for a screenplay he wrote.

Petersons.com has a way to search for summer programs. I’d list them here, but it makes more sense for you to look at the website yourself. If you scroll down the page you’ll see options for film, editing, lighting, and production.

There’s a fabulous summer program for that age group (going into grades 8+9) called Exploration. It’s not super academic, so it’s not good for the kids who want to learn calculus over the summer or something like that, but the program attracts a large, diverse group of creative students, and I think it’s perfect for something like film-making. I believe students take two “courses,” so he can take a film class but also something else that interests him. This is where I went as a kid, and I can’t imagine a better experience. It’s a special, remarkable place.

Here’s the description of their film production class:

Seattle Film Institute has some camps for kids, but they are not residential:

I know of a Vancouver 2 year film exposure class. I hear it ranks among the best…

Thank you all for the tips and links.
We will be exploring them :-)

My son spent two summers while in high school at the North Carolina School for the Arts ([North Carolina School of the Arts](http://www.ncarts.edu/)) Rising Filmmakers summer camp ([Summer Session| Filmmaking](http://www.ncarts.edu/summersession/filmmaking.htm).) I highly recommend it. It was at the time very reasonably priced. It’s even less if you are a North Carolina resident. NCSA is part of the UNC System.

A couple of summers ago he served as counselor at the LA campus of the New York Film Academy. He only took care of the kids. The teaching was done by professionals. He couldn’t comment on the quality of the learning experience for them, but he noted they all seemed to come from very well off families.

The School of Cinema and Performing Arts (SOCAPA) has filmmaking camps for 11-13 year olds and 14-18 year olds. My d went to their dance camp one summer at the NY campus and enjoyed it a lot.

The school has filmmakers, actors, scriptwriters, dancers. The filmmaking kids make the dance/music videos for the dancers, and make the short films for the scriptwriters & actors. So all the kids work together on the final projects; the films and videos are shown at the end, and each participant gets the DVDs of their work.
