Fin-aid question

My family makes below the $45k mark to be eligible for a full scholarship to Yale. I have $3900 work-study and $2800 or so student contribution. I know that the Yale aid policy states that whatever scholarship money you earn will go first towards the work-study, and then towards the student contribution.

I have $7,000 in outside scholarships, first covering the $3900 work-study, and then going towards the $2800. The $2800 student contribution covers mostly personal expenses such as travel and books, since the Yale scholarship and work-study covers the tuition and board. My question is that how will they transfer my scholarship money to me to cover my student contribution since it has been estimated for personal expenses? Will they give me an option to have that scholarship money (up to $2800 for student contribution) deposited into my checking/banking account?

Thanks for the help.

I thought work study goes towards personal expenses and student contribution goes to tuition and board. I reasoned it as so because work study is not deducted from the tuition bill. I would just call up Student Services and ask them quickly. They have been more than helpful with all of my questions. Also if you prefer they answer their e-mails quickly so that route doesn’t hurt either.

So if I have a $7,000 in scholarship monies, while my workstudy is 4,000, and student contribution is 2,000 (which is included as personal expenses), where will I get that money back from my scholarships to cover that personal expense portion, since any scholarship money should go to cover my work study and personal expenses before it gets deducted from my Yale scholarship?

pagEL60, you can requests refunds from your student account online at www.yale.edu/sis (you’ll need to log-in with net id and password). After logging in, click on the student accounts tab, and then on the link that says “Refund Request from Student Account.” This will enable you to receive money from Yale (you can fill out a form linked there if you want the money deposited directly to your bank account) if your student account has a positive balance, which, based on your scholarship info, it should.
If this doesn’t work, you should e-mail the Financial Aid office.

Thanks svalbardlutefisk. I tried that it worked fine.

How can I check the amount that I have left in my student account balance from that site, BTW?

click on the account history tab. In the page that comes up, one of the columns says balance. A positive balance means that you owe money, a negative balance means that you (or your scholarships) have paid extra money.
