finaid is ruthless

@cercit20 Where the heck did you apply to? That is a strong profile and as a female Pacific Islander you could have an edge.

@gearmom
Here is my list: all for either Computer engineering or Computer Science.

UWS
UWT (accepted… Doesn’t hold a candle to Seattle’s program though)
BU
Brandeis
UIUC
UofMiami
UT Austin
WUSTL
CMU - my super reach haha
Northeastern
Cornell - super reach

Thanks. I am hoping it gives me an edge but despite that my finaid is the issue. I would gladly take out loans for most of these schools… Because ultimately I want to get into a good enough PhD program that will pay my way through grad school. I think going to UWT will put me at a disadvantage.

@cercit20 I would have tried Dartmouth as your reach because it is part of their mission/charter? to help Native American students.

@cercit20 What can you afford each year?

@gearmom besides loans in my name… My mom is broke and can’t help at all.

@gearmom so the maximum on loans is what I can afford haha …

@cercit20 UChicago and Vanderbilt don’t ask for info from your NCP. Only your mom would count. Maybe @MYOS1634 has some advice for you.

This is a transfer student who has been out of high school for a number of years, and is not Native American but Asian. The deadlines may not be the same for a transfer student as a freshman, and the FA might be a lot less.

From the list, I don’t see the OP getting need based FA from

UT-Austin
UICU
BU

And not enough to make it affordable at

U Miami
Brandeis
WUSTL
CMU
Northeastern

Not all schools give good financial aid and at most transfers get lousy aid.
Applying to public universities OOS was never going to result in good results in terms of financial aid.
Check the deadlines for private universities from the “meet need” and see which ones have your major and which ones are still accepting applications - some may have march 30 deadlines.
Your profile is very strong. The issue is that you applied to universities that don’t have financial aid for OOS or transfers.
Women in engineering and Pacific islander are two hooks indeed but it won’t help at universities that don’t give any financial aid to OOS transfers. So you need to target the full need universities that offer CSE where those hooks will actually help.
Are you instate at Washington Seattle? (I see you applied to UWT).

I think this poster IS instate for WA as she mentions going to her instate safety because nothing else is affordable and accepted her.

Acceptance to a reach school (or any school), without being able to afford it, is like a denial

What kind of grad school are you anticipating to need as a computer engineer?

You need to go to an affordable school with ABET accredited computer engineering.

Instate would probably be most affordable, since transfer students don’t get much merit at most schools.

You can borrow $7,500 as a junior transfer. Have you been working and saving money?

Can you commute somewhere to finish your bachelor’s degree?

I did a search and there are 8 schools listed on the ABET site in WA.

Digipen IT
Gonzaga
Pacific Lutheran
Seattle Pacific
UW
UW Bothell
UW Tacoma
WSU

Gonzaga, Pacific Lutheran, WSU, UW Tacoma also come up in the ABET search for computer science.

In addition to that there are EWU, WWU, WSU Twin cities, WSU Vancouver.

@gearmom thank you. UChicago is an amazing school. if i do end up taking a gap year i would consider applying there.

@twoinanddone yeah, unfortunately it sucks haha i don’t see myself receiving nearly enough to attend any school :’( except instate ofcourse

@MYOS1634 yes i am in state… UWT is definitely accredited and the cheaper option but not somewhere i want to go ultimately.
also, do you think taking a gap year and reapplying in a year would affect me a lot? it is something i am partially considering. the only reason i wouldn’t is because my goal is to graduate college asap haha

@mommdc i work 2 jobs and take classes full time. & my dream would be to go to caltech for grad school or cornell. they have fellowships which would entirely cover my phd. i don’t want to have to pay for something that big.
& no other schools in washington except uw really interests me that much… i am not trying to be in denial i actually have realistic ideals about where i’ll go to school. i mostly applied to these schools after being encouraged by a professor in where i told him the same thing: “i’d love to go here but don’t think it’s possible.”

thankfully i had all of my application fees waived in the process, so applying to all of these schools was mainly time confusing.

If you got into UW it’d likely be your best cases - FAFSA only, right? And in state so state grants.

@MYO1634 i agree. & fafsa, state grants, & loans only. i work as well but i can’t foot a bill that large.

i’m kinda hoping i get into uw-seattle’s program… i mean i have the grades but overall we’ll see.

Can you get a job now that is related to your major? That way a gap year might allow you to progress toward your long-range goal. Also, depending on the position you land, you might find an employer that would help you pay for the rest of your bachelor’s degree, and you could study part-time. Yes, it would take you longer to get that degree but it could be debt free and the professional experience and contacts would be useful when you need to decide on a graduate program.

@happymomof1 i don’t think so. it’s hard to find a major related job without being a university student & only having an associates degree (no internship experience). i’ve also had no luck with looking for internships… the best i can do is do freelance work and build my portfolio. i am probably just going to stay in state, tough it out & finish my undergraduate asap, find a job, and look into moving up the ladder in grad school

UWS is a dream school for CS and CSE majors “in the know.” Don’t knock it just because it’s too close to home.

My DD was really thinking she wanted to go away for college, but when you get down to it, UW is too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Make sure to participate in the UW Allen school resume book and jobs database! You will find internships.

@AroundHere i would love to go to UWS for CSE or CS and would stay in state if i got accepted. it’s just that i really don’t think i’ll get accepted… GPA is too low  i have gotten into UWT’s program however, but it’s a smaller campus and not really where i want to go overall…
