If you haven’t already gotten you firm offer (not the one you got in December or January), that means that you need to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible. If they already have your FAFSA, which is necessary if you’re applying for financial aid, then they certainly wouldn’t ask for it again to consider a merit scholarship, which is not need based, so why wuld they need your FAFSA anyway?

That means that you have not yet submitted your FAFSA, which is required to get your financial aid decision. The letter you got in December was an estimate, not the actual financial aid package.

Have you done the 2010-2011 FAFSA? If not any aid offers you have are preliminary estimates only and require you to file FAFSA before they can be finalized. Without FAFSA being completed no aid will be disbursed to you, whatever your initial aid offer was.

What you received was a preliminary estimate. Because of the November deadline, EA applicants are not able to file a FAFSA prior to submitting their applications, but they are still required to file once the app goes live in January. The FAFSA was due February 1st for UChicago, so I suggest you submit it quickly.
