Thanks for the congrats! We were thrilled that S had great choices. Didn’t expect the decision to be so difficult. Waiting for the reality to set in, I guess…that we are DONE with this part of the process. Hurray! Can’t wait to hear where everyone settles. What a RIDE this has been.

After thousands of miles traveling, many hours visiting campuses/and programs, and much soul searching, my D (almostgracekelly) committed to UArts this morning! She was very decisive about it, much more so than I, and didn’t want to wait until the May 1st commitment deadline. She intends to add to thread by explaining her journey so I will let her speak for herself. Now the reality is hitting me that she will be very far away come August (which would be the case with any of her choices).

Congratulations to you and D!! Also hugs as son will be far away too (though not across the country, just half of it)

Congratulations to you both! Such exciting and wonderful days still ahead!

Yeah!!! And belated congrats to Christine too!!!

I can’t believe we are finally ready to do this!!

Applied BFA (both acting and MT some schools one or other, some both) NYU, Boston, CMU, CCM, Minn-Guthrie, Ithaca, Syracuse, Otterbein, BW
Applied BA (non Audition) Muhlenberg (did audition for scholarships) Miami, Kenyon, Brown, Northwestern

Prescreen : Ithaca- passed

“Re-directed”: CMU, CCM, Minn-Guthrie, Ithaca Otterbein, BW

Waitlisted: BU

Accepted BFA: Syracuse, NYU
Accepted BA: Muhlenberg, Kenyon, Northwestern (tough for me to say no, but D wants a BFA) Miami

Final Decision: NYU!!!

Training: voice lessons 4 years, dance 5 years (jazz, ballet), Acting 4 years summer conservatory training, and a performing arts HS (6 shows a year: 1 musical and 5 plays, at least 2 of which are classical) which I give HUGE credit- they have professionals on every level- costumes, lighting/tech/ scenic design- the full deal. First semester spent primarily on the auction process- they worked monologues, prescreen etch, not really the songs (MT not their main focus) so worked with the voice teacher (who is an adjunct for a BFA program) They did mock auditions, and brought local college profs, and local theater people- which provided great feedback. Also - D attended Tisch Summer program summer between junior/senior year- which was also great b/c participating in classes confirmed her desire for a BFA program, and lit a fire under her that there are LOTS of good people out there- like so many others, she is a good sized fish at home!

Auditioned on Campus: CMU, BW, Otterbein, Muhlenberg, CCM
Auditioned at Chicago Unifieds: NYU, Syracuse, Boston, Ithaca, Minn-Guthrie

As so many others have said- I feel this process may have been more stressful for me, that it was for D…I felt like this was the big finish of things that a parent helps a child achieve… and I was SO worried about whether she was choosing the right school, doing things in the right order, would she get sick during audition process. How could she handle senior shows AND auditions… you name it, I worried about it

D did 2 early auctions for programs not at the “top” of her list- Muhlenberg (scholarship) in Oct, BW in November, and that helped get her game together. I STRONGLY recommend this. Muhlenberg was lower pressure since it wasn’t BFA, BW not her favorite program before audition (though they were GREAT on the day- really raised the bar). Then we did CMU, Otterbein and CCM in January (all are within driving distance) and finished with Chicago Unifieds in Feb.

Among the many surprises of this process was how hard the actual CHOICE was once all the info was in. I want to say another round of thanks for all the wonderful people of CC. For months I was a “lurker”, mining information and tips- but I didn’t get involved in posting until D had a couple of acceptances. Maybe I didn’t feel “worthy” until I was sure that D was going to get to be part of the BFA world… the darkest thought of the “dark” time was that she would be shut out of all programs, and choosing the next segment path would become a heartbreak rather than a joy. The very day Syracuse came in I sent a text to my husband which said…" what do you think about a gap year…" (which I think she would have done - and I would have been fine with). Anyway- I was trying to thank people, so many of you here who have answered questions, calmed rants, supported dreams and been cheerleaders for all our kids choosing the life of the gypsy. My D is in a cloud of joy- and that is what I wanted all along

As parents, that is what we all want! Best wishes to you and your D as she starts the next step in her journey.

And to those whose children are still waiting for calls from schools where they are waitlisted, or trying to make sense of results that don’t meet their needs – you are in my thoughts, and I’m wishing all good things for you, too!

Congratulations! People say life’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Well in our case, the destination is pretty dang awesome.

Congrats to all!! I LOVE reading these happy endings.I am hoping to post ours within the next few days. @toowonderful- What studio is your daughter in at NYU?
