Final Exam flexibility

Anybody ever had to ask a prof to switch their exam date? I have exams for psych and film on December 20 and 21 a Friday and Saturday. My issue is I have to have surgery (I actually need to have knee scope and a small shoulder surgery done this winter break) I just found out about the shoulder today…i will be 6 weeks in a sling. For that reason I can’t wait until January and my surgeon only schedules the 1st and 3rd Fridays every month. December 20th needs to be my day. That’s 2 exams to reschedule! I hope the profs are cool about it. The last day of those classes is like Dec 11-12 so I have plenty of time to study and prepare for them even if I took them on the 18th or 19th

I suspect if you let them know now it will be fine.

You need to get a letter (something in writing to submit to professor) from your surgeon stating that he/she “only schedules the 1st and 3rd Fridays every month” and that December 20th is your surgery date. You need to submit this sooner rather than later so there is ample time to make proper arrangements.

Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery!

Thanks for the advice. I do have a sheet with info that says when she does surgery. I have not scheduled yet because I don’t want to schedule Dec 20 until I know I can do it that day…but I will talk to the profs this week and if they need to see the scheduled surgery, I will schedule it and show them. I have only heard back from one T.A. so far that I should talk to the prof in person…hopefully they are cool about it.

You need to schedule the surgery first for two reasons

To secure your place on the surgeon’s schedule
Understand that there are not unlimited openings, and the schedule is based on first-come, first-serve, barring any unforseen emergency surgeries. You need to know that with any surgery you also have to get pre-operative clearance which involves a visit to your primary care physician for him to do a history and physical (aka h & p - he will need to fill out an h & p form for hospital), labwork, and a chest x-ray at the minimum. If you have any personal history of cardiac issues, you may also need an EKG (if no history of problems, an EKG is typically not required at your age)

To obtain written proof of a medical excuse
Once you have the surgery scheduled, you WILL be able to get written proof (as per university policy) that you have surgery scheduled for that day…until it’s actually scheduled, you are just talking hypothetically.

If the professor says no AFTER you have proof you are scheduled, you then have the recourse of going to the department head. However, if you are not actually scheduled yet, the professor has every right to say no and you cannot fight it.

Ok that sounds good. I will get it scheduled then.
