Hello, everyone. I am slightly disappointed right now. I am a sophomore in college. This semester I had straight A’s up until the last week. It looks as though I will have an A- and a B+ on my transcript. I really would be classified as a freshmen, but I came in with a semester’s worth of credits. Really, I just finished my first semester, but came in with a lot of credits so I am now a sophomore. Will these grades prevent me from graduating Magna Cum Laude (3.84-3.94 at my school)? By the way, I have a 4.0 GPA in my major. I am only very concerned about this, as I am interested in attending a PhD program in political science after graduating. Thanks.
Are you staying for four full years or graduating early?
I will probably graduate 1 semester early. But that is it.
Then you can probably consider yourself basically a freshman, in which case you have plenty of time to bring up your GPA (6 semesters!). Six semesters of 4.0s would bring an initial GPA as low as 2.88 up to 3.84, if I did my math right.
I figure that my GPA will be about 3.8, so then I should be able to get tleast a 3.9
This is an arithmetic problem, but I can’t do it for you because I don’t have all the information about how many classes you’re planning to take each semester, how many credit hours they’re worth, etc. So here’s an example that you can adapt.
It looks like you’ll end up with seven semesters of classes that count toward your GPA. Suppose you take five three-credit-hour classes every semester and get straight As from now on. Your GPA when you graduate would be
(3.73 + 3.33 + 4.09 + 4.0156)/(3 + 3 + 9 + 156) = 3.97.
