Any other schools to suggest that offer merit aid----5 hours from NYC----Jewish population of 15%+??

Thank you!!! Know these posts are long, so I really appreciate your consideration and time

I’m from Long Island as well, and as a fellow All-State Choir participant I just wanted to say that you may want to reconsider American University as far as the Music Program goes. I was considering it myself at one time, but upon numerous e-mails to contacts of mine in the professional music world, American is not that great as far as the Music program.
As far as your chances:
Brown, Columbia, Barnard, and GW might be a bit on the reachy side, only because they have low admission rates/difficult admissions processes.
The rest look like great matches! Good Luck.

Have you looked into Oberlin as well?

Thanks for your imput. We will check into American more. They also have a musical theater major, but it seemed going the music major route (vocal performance) would give her the option of more voice classes. But if they are not of good quality, then nothing would be gained by having the music major.

We kept schools like Oberlin off the list for 2 reasons…pretty remote and far from home…and conservatory setting that would make taking a (second) academic major difficult.

D enjoys musical theater as well as classical voice. NYU’s Steinhardt program probably covers voice best, but it would be difficult to double major. It is still a frontrunner for her. She did a summer program there in musical theater and LOVED it!! Her only hesitation is not doing an academic major as well. She might settle for just a minor though, if she has the opportunity to get in.

Assuming she would get accepted in any of the schools listed (including the obvious reaches)…what schools do you think have a balance between good vocal performance and the opportunity to realistically major in an academic area?

Brandeis, GW, Muhlenberg, Barnard and American all offer vocal performance majors plus musical theater opportunities as EC’s. Since their music programs are less demanding than NYU (BA vs. BM), it would be much easier to double major. We have to do more research on the ivies. Because the ivies are more difficult period, it may be difficult to double major and do theater as a EC.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.
