Finals?

Hi, I’m a freshman ED applicant this year (anxiously awaiting my notification letter that’s due next week, ahhhhh!) and I was just wondering about what finals are like for someone who is in CAP21 or any drama studio for that matter. Are finals given in studio classes or is it just the general studies courses? (If they do…) Are they theory tests or performance based? I’ve just always been curious.

In the studio classes, there are not written exams (perhaps there is for Music Theory in CAP21 but my D placed out of that class so I am not sure). In CAP21, at the end of each semester, they have have “demos” for each class and so the student performs songs, scenes, dances, etc. depending on the class, in front of the faculty. They get written evaluations for each class on various criteria (ratings) and narrative comments and a final semester grade. In ETW, it is a little like that too but the demos are not evaluative (I don’t think) and it is called “share day.” There are written evaluations and grades for the semester, however.

In the academic classes (theater studies and liberal arts ones), it all depends on the class. Most of the classes my D has taken have had papers and projects and not exams. She has only taken a few exams in her four years at NYU. This semester, for example, she has papers and projects for her non-studio classes.

Good luck to you.
