Financial Advice please!

@Publisher PMed, Publisher

@anon145 Second option!

@frozenyyogurht look through the course offerings that were honors in the past to see how many you would be able to take that are within your major/study area. My kid was considering 2 honors colleges, however, for the one without preregistration she only would be able to at most take 2 single honors classes in her major. (but likely maybe only one based on sequence timing). If a bunch of classes you need to take offer honors classes WHEN you need to take them that is good. For UNC for example, (historically) very few stem classes are offered as honors at typically at most 1 per field.

Too early to offer meaningful advice as you do not yet know of your other options & costs.

Right now this is all speculation. When you have all decisions in hand in you can compare and see what fits your budget. It sounds like you have one affordable option at the moment (which is a great start).

Update: Accepted EA to UNC Chapel Hill OOS, but no word on financial aid yet. I know that financial aid for OOS is often low.

Did you run the Net Price Calculator on the school’s web site?

I don’t know your major but I can assure that a lot of your assumptions are not true at UNC-CH. I would suggest posting on the UNC-CH board about any questions you have. Also, I believe UNC-CH still meets full need (as they define it). Also, I believe they guarantee the tuition for four years.

@thumper1

The NPCs won’t give us an accurate representation because my family does have things that aren’t factored in correctly through the price calculator, you’re right

“Since you aren’t even sure of your undergrad major…how can you be so sure you will need to or even want to go to” grad school?"

True, but I still think that I will pursue some type of graduate school education. I will try to narrow down exactly what during my time in college

Good luck with UNC need based aid. The school does pledge to meet the full need of all accepted students…as UNC calculates that need to be. UNC and UVA are the only publics with this pledge. Michigan is working in that direction but hasn’t gotten there…yet.

@blossom This is true. But you have to agree that the atmosphere at an LAC and huge research institution will be vastly different–that’s why they’re categorized separately.

I’ll have to wait for the results to come in, but right now, my in-state honors college is the best financial idea, especially if I want to go to graduate school. With the merit scholarships plus in state tuition, I will come out with little to no debt… its a hard choice and you’re right, I’m long in conjecture and short on facts because I ultimately don’t know until I get to college.

@DadTwoGirls That makes sense… and thank you for sharing through PM

@TomSrOfBoston This is true…I don’t want to stay in-state but it seems to be what many people are advising me to do…I feel like I will miss out on a lot.

@thumper1

Thank you, thumper1, for all your help :slight_smile:

@Groundwork2022 I needed to hear that. It’s still hard though. Feels like I’ve been waiting to get out for four years already, only to continue.

UNC meets full need based on the Fafsa EFC, however you will have to fill out the CSS profile for your first year.

Best of luck to you and congrats on your instate scholarship!

@twogirls thank you!

It’s not over till you have all financial aid packages in hand.
Some deadlines are February 1 if you need to apply to a couple more universities - run the NPC to some that offer your major.
