Financial Aid Advice

Something that happened to my D last year might be helpful for you 2015’ers to know. When her financial aid letter came (snail mail, BTW), the Pell Grant was not listed and neither was the ACG. I knew she qualified for a small amount of Pell ($1,400 total), so I contacted the financial aid office immediately. Not only did they add the Pell to her award package, BUT the Pell also triggered almost $7,000 in additional grants from NYU. That was a bunch more non-loan money. So, my advice is to know if you are eligible for Pell, check it on the financial aid package you get, and if it’s not there, contact financial aid! Also, I have found that email works well for contacting them. I have always gotten responses quickly.

Thank you, that’s incredibly helpful to know! When did your daughter receive her package by snail mail?

Seems like early May…I don’t have that folder handy. About a month after her letter of acceptance and AFTER we had to go ahead and send the $800 deposit, so that was a leap of faith. I think this year they are doing it electronically, so I’m not sure if you will get snail mail or not. My D’s letter of acceptance was snail mail, too. Nice piece of paper to frame!

There’s this thing called Albert that you will become VERY familiar with…it’s part of their website where you go to make payments, register, get grades, accept financial aid etc. At some point you will get an email that directs you to Albert…and how to use the system. Pretty nifty once you learn how!

Yeah, I have my Albert login already, and I got a 6,000 Pell Grant, which is awesome, but it seems like not the situtaion you were describing. Damn. Well, thanks for your help, anyway!

Yea, the good news in our case was that the Pell Grant was left off the first letter, so when I contacted them, and they verified it, then the additional NYU grant kicked in. It was an awesome surprise!
