Financial Aid Disappointment

Daughter only got a $6000 scholarship even with two perfect SAT scores. Oh well, it wasn’t her first choice anyway.

fiskelove - and your FAFSA EFC was what? Just curious, I had heard USC does real well with need based aid. Anyway, with perfect SATs why worry?

She didn’t have perfect PSAT scores so she just missed being a National Merit Scholar. That means the $6,000 scholarship is it for us.

Lol… it’s not rare to see people with two perfect SAT scores (I’m assuming you are talking about SAT IIs). And what AFA007 said - USC does well with need based; you didn’t answer the question about your EFC…

They were SAT I scores and our EFC is $26,000.

Same, I’m pretty disappointed in my financial aid package too! I got about $10,000 in scholarships + loan…so that brings USC’s lovely price tag down to like $40k…

Looks like I’m going to have to say goodbye to USC now :(

I feel your pain. The main reason I encouraged my daughter to apply to USC was because I’d heard it gave good merit aid. I thought she was a perfect merit candidate!! She got into Berkeley, UCLA, Duke and won full tuition Regents scholarships at UC Santa Barbara, Davis and Santa Cruz. Oh well, I figure it’s USC’s loss!

USC had double the applicants it had 4 years ago. Although they are still pretty generous, they have their limits also. Candidates are increasingly qualified and competitive.

how did she miss the NMF score cutoff and get a perfect score on the SAT? what class did she take? and how do you get 2 perfect scores, do u take it 2 differnet times?

One of my kids did that. Was a Commended Scholar, but followed it up with a 800,800,710 on the SAT1. It happens.

does anyone know what the qualifications of getting the Trojan Scholarship and the University Scholarship were? I can’t find these in the list of scholarships.

I see your daughter’s SAT was 800CR, 800W, & 630M (2230) and that she applied to Annenberg. You have to keep in mind that plenty of kids (& on CC) get in that range of SAT scores that apply to Annenberg-- and though they get notified early, don’t get a particularly big scholarship because it is so competitive. IMO Annenberg seems to be one of the hardest schools to get a rather large scholarship from. The only Presidential/Trustee scholarship interviewee I’ve seen that applied to Annenberg had a 2300+ SAT.

ann thats interesting…makes sense i applied to annenberg

im NMF so i get presidential if i get accepted…im a little concerned that i wont get in jsut cause they dont want to pay the half tuition that NMFs are guaranteed

It’s OK, we’ve recovered. She got a $20,000 scholarship from Duke yesterday which is her first choice. Duke has been her dream school since seventh grade. So we’re very happy here!!

congrats. like most schools, USC has to adjust their offers based on their applicant pool. the more they want a particular student & the more money the U has to spread around, the larger the amount they can offer in grant or scholarship rather than loan. USC has become increasingly competitive. glad to hear kids have many options.

wow regents at santa barbara, davis and cruz isnt very convincing.

Trojansfighton–So glad you’re going to USC and my daughter is not. Hope you enroll in a course in Humility while you’re at it.

i just got my financial aid package. :[

apparently USC expects us to sell our house so that i can attend USC.

sorry to hear that bryan :(

guess beard is blueeee after all

^

haha, hahah… hhahahah… hhaha :)
