Financial Aid for Dual Majors

I am interested in applying to colleges with dual major programs because I want to dual major in both Theatre and History. I was wondering how they grant scholarships for people that want to apply for dual degrees in the arts and humanities. Can they grant an academic scholarship as well as a scholarship for the arts? Any more in depth information as to how they grant scholarships for dual degree majors would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Well, for entering freshmen, there aren’t generally a lot of departmental scholarships available in academics. You may qualify for a general academic scholarship based on high school performance but you aren’t likely to get a straight out history scholarship your first year. Most kids change their majors so understandable that colleges wait. Arts scholarships tend to be separate and schools can have different rules (some require you to be a major, others just require you participate in the arts programs.)

So yes, you can get a general academic scholarship and a theatre scholarship at the same time (my D was given this combo at several schools.) However, if you are specifically looking for a history scholarship, you’ll need to wait until you declare sometime in Sophomore year.

It totally depends on the school. One of my kids went to BU…and that school gave performance awards and academic merit awards to the same student. HOWEVER…it was very difficult for performing arts majors to double major.

We know folks who went to the Hartt School. If you got a performance award (this was 2003-2007) you could not receive academic merit aid as well.

As noted above…a scholarship for an entering freshman simply because they plan to major in history…unlikely.

Depends on the school. At my kids’ school it will award for stats and for talent. So, it may be better to declare - say - theater as an incoming frosh and get talent and merit, and then adding the 2nd major upon arrival.

Some schools won’t let you name two majors going in. Some require you to wait til you start college to name the second major

It really depends on the school. For Theater (or music), one may even get departmental scholarship as freshmen. Otherwise, for most schools that do not admit directly into a major/program are not likely to offer departmental scholarships to freshmen but just the school wide ones.

Most theater and music scholarships are based on the strength on your audition.
