I am an international student but my parents are working on getting a green card. I don’t think I would get any money in freshman year but I think I will be getting some money once I am a sophomore. I think I will be going to boston university and it would be really helpful if I could get some money. How much would I get approximately if my parents make total of 120-30k a year?
If YOU are a citizen or green card holder, you’d be eligible for federal aid. Most likely with an income of over $100k, you’d only be eligible fore unsubsidized loans.
Well…with a $130,000 income…and a green card…you can get a $5500 Direct Loan for freshman year, and a $6500 Direct Loan for sophomore year.
When my kid went to BU, our income was lower than that…and our family contribution exceeded the cost of,attendance. No need based aid…at all.
BU does not guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. I doubt you will see grant money from this school.
But run the net price calculator…and see. With a green card, it should be accurate…or close anyway.
That is approximately our income and we are anticipating zero financial aid for our first college bound kid next year (household of six). Will be depending on merit aid from the schools, scholarships, and student loans.
@3js3ks Speaking from experience, it is never a good idea to count of merit aid. You may be really luck and get a large merit scholarship, but large awards are a rarity.
You can count on merit aid at colleges where your stats offer guaranteed merit aid awards.
But this student is an international student…right? So those are not plentiful in number.
Now…if he has his green card…we’ll…there may be more guaranteed merit aid options.
@exlibris97 thankfully I have some high achievers in my house, but from reading this website I see that there is a lot of competition to be the top of the class. Thankful for all the shared knowledge here to help us navigate the school application process and make good choices to keep costs down!
Nope. Nothing should be available to you. You are considered too wealthy for aid. The only aid you should be offered would be the unsubsidized federal loans. Take solace in the fact that you are not alone. Many, many people in the same boat.
OP is not even entitled to federal loans. He is not a green card holder.
This student is an international student at this point. Until he gains permanent resident status, he is not eligible for federally funded need based aid…including the loans.
