Financial aid for OOS at SUNY ESF

What is the financial aid for Out of State students in SUNY ESF?
I am an American citizen living in India.

Probably not great. Run the NPC on the school’s website.
How much will your parents pay each year?

Unless you receive merit money from the school, the only aid that you would be eligible for is PELL and Federal loans

My EFC is around 11k. Total cost of attendance is around 30k. Will the college cover the rest of it?

Run the Net Price Calculator on the school’s web site and see if they forecast any merit money for you.

Not likely. The SUNY school itself doesn’t have much FA to give out. Do the NPC.

Most of the SUNY’s funding for their universities comes from the NY state taxpayers.

Since you are not a resident of NY state, you don’t qualify for their state funds.

Public universities, like the SUNYs have very limited funding because they have to rely upon their own states to pay the bills. If your EFC is 11k, I doubt that you are eligible for a Pell Grant, but you may be eligible for loans.

You applied to a public university which has finite funding; these universities typically don’t have a lot of merit dollars.
Private universities tend to have more options because they receive their monies from alumni and donors.
Run the NPC.

The total cost of attendance is $37,000 living on campus in the least costly dorm.

Your $11,000 EFC puts you out of range for federally funded grant aid. You are not eligible for NY funded grant aid.

You can take a $5500 federally funded student loan. But really…that’s possibly all the aid you will receive.

The OOS COA is much higher than that.

No, and why would it? The college has little free money to give. The NY taxpayers would not want their tax dollars going to an OOS Student.
Think about it…why would a school charge a high OOS rate if they’re just going to cover those costs with their own precious few dollars?

The OOS cost is of attendance is $37,000 a year. Including tuition, fees, room, board.

If your EFC is $11,000, you will be expected to pay AT LEAST that amount.

The only guaranteed aid you will receive is a $5500 Direct Loan.

Can your family pay $32,000 a year?

The EFC would be too high for Pell Grant. Unless you get merit, you would only get the $5,500 student loan as guaranteed aid.

EFC is a number that tells you if you are eligible for federal aid programs. To get a better sense of expected family contribution you need to run the Net Price Calculator (NPC) for some schools.

Definitely run the NPC for SUNY EFC. When I ran it it in April, it showed over $8,000 in grants and scholarships (one lump sum, not broken down) for the $20k - $30k EFC range.

The NPC states that the Coa would be around 16k for me, which seems pretty affordable. Even if my family pays 11k (EFC), I can cover the rest with work-study.

The only aid you will receive for SUNY is a $5500 loan. You are not eligible for any New York State aid: TAP, Excelsior Scholarships or STEM scholarships that are only available for NYS residents

You are really over estimating how much work study you will receive. There is absolutely no way you can or will receive over 20k in work study. Maybe 2-3k, but 20 is out of the question. Your family will virtually be full pay at SUNY ESF.

So…the COA is $37,000…and you will get the $5500 Direct Loan. So…now you are down to $31,500.

How exactly are you going to pay the $31,500?

Your family will be responsible for the WHOLE balance, not just $11,000 EFC.

What did the NPC show for grant money for you?

When you did the NPC, did you put you were an instate resident?

??? Work-study will likely only be about $2,000…IF YOU GET SOME. Often WS is not awarded to OOS students or to students who don’t qualify for Pell Grants.

And, because that SUNY is OOS for you, your parents would be expected to pay for MOST costs…not just EFC.

You asked if the college would give you the rest after EFC. The answer is, NO. Why would it? You’re not a resident of that state. Why would NY taxpayers cover the rest of the cost for you when your family doesn’t pay taxes there.

Run the Net Price Calculator on the school’s website and copy/paste the results here.

Ran the NPC for that EFC

Estimated tuition and fees: +$17,907
Estimated room and board: +$16,110
Cost Paid Directly to College of Environmental Science & Forestry $34,017
Estimated books and supplies: +$1,200
Estimated personal expenses: +$1000
Estimated transportation: +$600
Estimated total cost of attendance: $36,817
Estimated grants and scholarships: -$10,026

Estimated Net Price: $26,791
(Price of attendance minus grant aid)

The Loans estimate is based on loan funding options including Student Loans and Parent Loans. You may elect not to borrow to fund your education. Contact the financial aid office at the campus for additional information.

Estimated loans: -$8,729
Estimated work-study award if eligible: -$0
Estimated out-of-pocket cost: $17,962
(Net price minus loans and work-study)

Note that NO WS estimate is given. Don’t know if that means that they don’t award to OOS or to nonPell

This doesn’t include costs of International Travel and doesn’t include costs of health insurance…so add another $4000 to the above for those costs.

Also, the above costs are for the current school year. Each year, the costs will go up.

And, who knows what that grant/scholarship estimate is based on.

The loan amount is strange. Says that it’s also including a Parent Plus loan. Are your parents US citizens? Are they willing to take out Parent Plus Loans?

I think this where the the net price calculator could be problematic, especially when calculating aid at public universities for OOS students. The NPC needs to break down the source of this “grant aid”, even if it has a disclaimer that although you may be eligible for this aid, it is not guaranteed.

Other than Pell, it is highly unlikely that OP will get a penny in grant aid from SUNY (especially NYS aid). Any SEOG funds will first go to EOP students as part of their financial package.
