You should probably focus on getting in first. When you apply to Chicago in the next few years, the admissions rate will probably be in the 10-15% range, so even with those stats, admission is hardly guaranteed. Merit scholarships are extremely difficult to get, and most of the people who get them were admitted to HYPSM. The scholarships are used to get them to come to Chicago. I’m sure you’d have a good chance at admission and at the merit scholarship, but the former isn’t guaranteed and the latter is unpredictable.

Are you an international? I’m only asking because you have high stats as a sophomore, but you spelled it as “softmore.”

Also, have you already taken the ACT and SAT as a Sophomore? You are fortunate that your parents can send you to UChicago (if you get in) even if you don’t get merit aid.

*You are fortunate that your parents can send you to UChicago (if you get in) even if you don’t get merit aid. *

He still needs to find out how much his parents can/will pay. Some people with $200k incomes still cannot pay $55k+ for schools like UChicago. Actually, the costs could be more if it invovles international travel a few times per year.

Couple of questions
First is from mom2collegekids about your status (international or not)
Second question depends on the first. If you are international, you are eligible for merit aid and U. Chicago has a little bit for which Internationals can be considered (as I understand), but it is very competitive and based on a variety of factors, hence not predictable.

If you are not international, you would most probably not qualify for need based aid (again they are others on this forum who know a lot more about this then I do they can weigh in, but you can try you FSFA profile and that will give you quick read on expected parental contribution, so all I am making is an educated guess is that you may not qualify with that level of family income). So you are back to trying for merit based aid or aid from other scholarships.

No, I am not international. I live in Madison, Wisconsin. If University of Chicago is going to cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars, is it even worth it? Instead, if I go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (-10th in undergraduate economics), will it be more worthwhile for a good undergraduate economics education?

PS: My parents will probably not pay more than 40K for my college.

Thanks Anyway!
