I am asking this on behalf of a friend:
Suppose an individual attends another Maryland institution and receives financial aid via fafsa and grants, including a school grant.
Will the person receive the same amount less the school grant if he/she transfers to UMD ? In other words, is this determined equally regardless of the school attended?
Financial aid will vary from school to school. For example I currently go to Villanova (applied to transfer to UMD) and part of my financial aid was a Villanova Grant, which I obviously won’t get at UMD. Each school varies in how much of expressed need they meet. It really just depends on your expected family contribution and your schools endowment as to how much of your need they’ll meet.
The aid doesn’t automatically follow you to the transfer school, so if the new school was not listed on the original FAFSA that was filled out and submitted you need to go back and make the changes. Log back in and go to “Make FAFSA Corrections” and you can update which colleges receive requests for loans, grants, etc. Any school specific money will not follow you obviously, but other things can change as well. Just make sure to inform both school beforehand it will make it a lot easier.
