My spouse and I have been separated for one year. Our tax filing status for 2010 tax year is spouse 1 - head of household and spouse 2 - married filing separate. Our moneys have not been co-mingled for the past year. Our college student lives with spouse 1 (head of household). Does the financial aid office look at both tax filings or just the head of household?

If the school uses FAFSA, which is the form for Federal aid, then only the custodial parent’s tax return will be examined. If the school uses CSS Profile, as many private schools do, then it generally looks at both.

This appears to be your first post. If your kid is already in college and you were not already asked for your asset and income figures to apply for financial aid, then it was probably FAFSA.
