Financial aid question...kind of

My mom has started at a private school here working to get her B.A in Accounting to become a CPA.

She got the pell grant along with a lot of other financial aid. For a year she would have paid 11,800 and got 11,620 in financial aid. Her husband makes roughly 80,000 a year.

Now…I’m an identical twin. We start at Valdosta State University this June as freshman. My question is…with all 3 of us in college for 1.5 years (then mom gets out lol) will our financial aid look similar to what our moms did?

Like, will we basically gets our costs covered too, or not?

I doubt that you’ll get the kind of aid that your mom got because Valdosta State is a pubic university that doesn’t have a lot of money for scholarships. Check out their financial aid web site, their common data set or e-mail the financial aid office to ask what percentage of students’ demonstrated financial need they normally are able to fill, and how much of that typically is in loans.

It may be that your costs would be lower if you went to a private college that has very generous need-based aid or that has merit aid that you qualify for. Check out more colleges to see where you might get the best deal.

We are perfectly happy with our choice of college. We were accepted there in June. We will both recieve the HOPE scholarship which pays for all tuition, gives you $150 in books each semester, and it pays for all fees. My sister is an aspiring nurse and will recieve $6,000 a year from a hospital.

It wont be too bad. I am hoping to get the PROMISE teacher forgivable loan as a junior/senior which will give me $3,000 each year.

We have $10,000 on a CD right now…

Just curious about what FAFSA may do.

It sounds like the OP (and twin and sister) really need room/board finaid as their tuitions are covered by their other grants in aid. There is no way to know what your college will give you. My guess is that it won’t be too much…but that is a guess. Just fill out the FAFSA and see. And remember that finaid for room/board is considered as income for tax purposes.

I am a little confused…are you already enrolled in college (as of June) or what? Exactly when will you be going? If it is NOW you may have missed the opportunity to net yourself much more money from a public university for this academic year. If it’s for next June, you need to check to see if the school even awards finaid for summer study. Some do…some don’t. Many award finaid for the academic year…sept-june (or so).
