I’m from Alabama and come March I’ll be moving out-of-state to New York to live with my older sister and her husband and kids and will be attending community college up there. When I go to file my FAFSA do I have to put my parents who will still be living in Alabama or my sister and brother in laws address and taxes, who I will be living with in New York?
How old are you? If you are under 24, your parent information will be required…and you will continue to be a resident of alabama for tuition purposes.
but if your sister is your court appointed guardian, that is different. Is Your sister a court appointed guardian? Or are you just moving there?
I’m 19 and I’ll just be moving there
Then your parents are still your parents. You will continue to be a resident of Alabama for tuition purposes, and your parent information will be required on your financial aid application forms.
You should check your community college costs in NY state. It is very possible that you will be paying the out of state tuition rate for those community colleges. But sometimes the community colleges are more lenient with the residency requirements. But check…you don’t want a financial, surprise!
