Hello,

If my financial aid package is greater than the Tuition and Room & Board costs, how will I obtain the additional money from NU (It’s meant for Books and Personal Expenses)?

Not entirely sure, but I know that if your package includes work study, that money gets paid to you.

I have $2500 as work-study. From what I’ve heard we are supposed to deposit the said amount with the University at the start of the year. They get us a job through which we earn the money back. In this case, will I have to give the money to the University at the start of the academic year or can I use it to buy books, etc?

You heard wrong. You are required to pay all fees etc. to the university it is due. How you do that is up to you. Your work study job pays DIRECTLY to you.

The easiest way to figure out you may or may not owe is take work study out of the calculation. Figure out tuition and room and board as that is what you will be billed for. Next, subtract scholarships and grants and what is left is what you owe. Just assume the money you make in work study will be used for personal expenses throughout the year. Book fees for first term you will need to figure out how to pay for as they will be due at the beginning prior to you earning any money to pay for them. You can save some of the money earned throughout the term to pay for the next term’s books though.
