Financial Aid

So i have a huge problem, I currently live with both my parents however the marriage is very rocky. my father des not provide for me or my mother at all. My sister lives in our household but she supports herself. My mom provides for me and my dad does not at all. He literally only pays the bills in the house. My mom does everything for me. my dad makes 66k a yr and my mom makes 31k a yr. I currently attend Monmouth and i pay a hefty price for the school. My parents file separately (married filing seperate) and my mom is the one who puts me through college. countless times i have told monmouth i need financial aid but they look at me like im crazy. i need finacnial aid but they dont give me much since im a resident from NY. please help me cuz i dont wanna be in debt. i need some anwers.

If your dad pays the bills, he does support you. Colleges won’t discount his income.

Have you compared what you’re paying to the cost of a SUNY? Are there any within commuting distance of your home? Your income qualifies you for the tuition Excelsior grant at SUNY schools. If you can commute, you could use the federal student loan for transportation and books. If you wanted to dorm your net cost would be about $13k/year. The federal student loan is $6500 for sophs. If you work summers you can probably raise $3k. That leaves ~$3500 plus books and travel for your mom to pay. If your dad is paying all the housing related bills (mortgage/rent, utilities, insurance, taxes), then maybe your mom could swing that without borrowing.

You need to transfer to a college that is more affordable. Monmouth is NOT going to give you more aid…you asked and they said NO.

You misunderstand the meaning of the term “support”. A father who only pays the bills- in fact, he is supporting the household.

You need to find a college in NY where you will instate.

In what world would this mean that your dad doesn’t support you and your mom???

BECAUSE your dad is paying those bills with HIS salary, your mom’s salary is “freed up” to help pay for your stuff. If your mom had to pay for the household bills, guess what? She’d have no money for you.

Silly to be paying for Monmouth when you could be going to a SUNY for much cheaper.

Monmouth costs about $50k per year to attend. They don’t have more money to give you. I hope you’re not borrowing a lot to go there. Waste.

Go to a SUNY! Pre-PT isn’t really a major. You just have to meet the reqts of a DPT program.

You need to look at colleges where you can take the prerequisite courses to apply to DPT programs.

Find someplace where your undergrad loan debt will be at a minimum.

Also, understand that funding for these DPT programs is rare…so you will likely be paying the full cost to attend.
