financial constraints with college -- questions

<p>Music librarianship has recently piqued my interest since it combines a few of my biggest passions (language, history, music). However, it’s a very narrow and competitive field so I’d definately be shooting for at least a master’s degree. Undergraduate degree looks like it would be music/humanities or something similar, and graduate would be library science and possibly music.</p>

<p>I’m just wondering what kind of job (possibly in a similar field) would be high-paying enough for me to pay state school tuition and leave some breathing space for practice and study time (something that won’t require long training periods; fields like instrument repair are related but take a while to establish a clientele). Also, if I can’t afford a master’s degree right away, what kind of job would I be able to snag with a music/humanities bachelor’s?</p>

D looked seriously into music librarianship as an undergrad after she decided a performance degree wasn’t what she wanted (she ultimately chose to transfer to musicology).Like you, she has a love of research, scholarship, history, etc. She was at Arizona State and worked at their library (main branch, and science, not the music library) p/t.
She used the Indiana U library school website as a guide, as their library/music major is highly regarded. They have a dual degree masters.
They require a music undergrad degree, not humanities.
You are right, its a narrow field, but I think graduates are in high demand.
She ultimately chose to follow a PhD path in Musicology but used her undergrad p/t library experience to get a cataloguing job at the Music Library at her current school.
You might want to look into a Musicology/Ethnomusicology undergrad major. It would combine all your interests, and still prepare you to consider Music Librarianship later on.</p>

<p>If you are interested in Music Librarianship, take a look at the following sites:</p>

<p>[Music</a> Library Association - MLA Employment & Education](<a href=“http://www.musiclibraryassoc.org/employmentanded/musiclibrarianship.shtml]Music”>http://www.musiclibraryassoc.org/employmentanded/musiclibrarianship.shtml)</p>

<p>[IU</a> Cook Music Library: Music Librarianship Specialization Program](<a href=“http://library.music.indiana.edu/L631/index.html]IU”>http://library.music.indiana.edu/L631/index.html)</p>

<p>The better jobs are held by those who have a Masters level degree in Music AND an MLS. I agree with Cathymee – Indiana has one of the best (if not THE best) programs in Music Librarianship.</p>

<p>It’s a wonderful career and would certainly combine your varied interests.</p>
