Financial Situation

This is my situation: my father is currently unemployed from 2010, but will start working in 2016. We live in the house of a family member here in Peru, so we don’t pay taxes. We only pay rent and services. For our expenses (food and rent) a family member sends us monthly financial support. To help my parents, I have had merit scholarship since last year, because the other years weren’t available or because I’ve just changed country and school. Next year my parents will return to Europe so that my father could be back to work. I’m also thinking of taking an international student loan and my uncle will provide some financial support as well for the other expenses.

What should I write on the CSS when they ask me stuff about taxes or what will my parents pay. Also what should I put so they could give me the scholarships for need base (my options are RIT and NYU for now).

Neither RIT or NYU meet full need. And definitely not for international students. Both are very cost,y schools.

If you are expecting a full, free ride, including all costs…to either of these schools, I think you need to rethink your college list.

For NYU, you will need to submit a certificate of finances that verifies that you have enough funds to pay for FOUR years of costs…at $70,000 a year. Will you be able to,do,that?

Looks like very limited funds for international students…and scholarships are merit based. I don’t see anything here about need based aid except that you could take loans. Not sure how you would get those loans in your financial situation.

Thank you for your honest answer. These two colleges are my top choices, of course I know they’re expensive but if at least get scholarships for half tuition I can go. My uncle agreed to help me as long as I get financial aid. My other options are community colleges, so I won’t have problem there.

https://www.rit.edu/emcs/ptgrad/international/international_financial.php here’s the need-based scholarship for RIT

I checked your link. There isn’t anything I saw about need based scholarships. What exactly do you mean?

^"All international undergraduate applicants are considered for merit scholarships, which typically range from $6,000 to $15,000 per academic year and are renewable with a 2.5 or higher RIT grade point average. Scholarships awards are only offered upon admission to RIT.

International Student Financial Aid: RIT offers limited need-based scholarships for international undergraduate students. To apply, students must demonstrate financial resources of at least $30,000 USD and complete the College Board International Student Financial Aid Application."

RIT expects its international students to pay for at least $30,000??

"Undergraduate Scholarships and Financial Aid

International Student Financial Aid: RIT offers limited need-based scholarships for international undergraduate students. To apply, students must demonstrate financial resources of at least $30,000 USD and complete the College Board International Student Financial Aid Application."

OP, you really need to call these two schools and discuss with their financial aid offices. These schools give very little (see above “limited”) aid to international students.

I agree with the two above posters. RIT provides merit aid, but not need based aid…for international students. Plus the student must demonstrate they have at least $30,000 in the bank to fund college.

I hate to be harsh, but I can’t see how either NYU or RIT will be affordable for, this student.

Thank you for your concerns. I’m thinking about it too. I have to choose if I’d rather have a loan (and go to a good university) or go to a more affordable college (but surely not as good). BTW I have to say my major is in the science field (Biotech/Biomolecular Engineering) so this is the reason it’s hard to find a good college that could teach me that.

There are many cheaper schools that can give you that education. You need to do more research.

Your parents will need to take these loans.,you won’t be able to get loans in the U.S. unless you have a cosigner here who is willing and able to cosign for all, four years.

That won’t help you at NYU…unless you take out $280,000 in loans. You have to show, the finds for all four years to attend NYU.

Are you an international applicant, or are you a US citizen educated abroad? Your options are very different depending on that.

Who has been helping you make your college list?

How much money will be available for your education?

You should contact the counselors at the EducationUSA advising center that is closest to where you live. There are several in Peru. https://educationusa.state.gov/find-advising-center?field_region_target_id=&field_country_target_id=272&field_center_level_value=All They will have useful ideas for you.

If you have excellent grades and ACT or SAT scores, there are places in the US where you could get significant merit-based scholarships. You have missed some of the cut-off dates. It might make more sense for you to take a gap year and apply for fall 2017. Look at these two threads for ideas.

I went to Fulbright and they were the ones who told me to apply to these colleges.

Did they understand your financial limitations? Did they understand the financial aid policies of these schools?

Yes, they told me I could apply for a loan or a relative could help us. I got 2400 in the SAT so probably they’re trying to help me so I could have a good resumé.

Well…if you are a senior, you got bad advice if you really have a 2400 SAT score. Do you have a perfect GPA as well?

If your grades are very high as well, you should be applying to colleges that guarantee to meet full need. You should have applied (it’s too late for some now) for guaranteed full ride scholarships for your stats. Look at the links in post 11…although deadlines have passed for some of the more generous awards at some of these places.

As of December 22, you hadn’t applied anywhere. Did you get your applications submitted? Did you end up applying to John’s Hopkins? Where else?

ETA…are you saying Fulbright told you that you or your unemployed parents could take out huge loans?

This story isn’t making sense from my perspective.

I could take loans from an US bank with a signature from a US citizen. My uncle is american and he’ll help me.

I understand your uncle can cosign as a U.S citizen. But really…there are schools that meet full need…IF your SAT is really 2400, and if you have a GPA that is high as well.

But you may have missed the application deadlines for these schools.

For NYU, you have to demonstrate that you have $280,000 available to pay for college. Your uncle would need to get loans in that amount. Will he do so?

For RIT, you need $30,000 a year…minimum. So…$120,000.

That is a ton of loans.

How exactly do you intend to repay these huge loans. You won’t be getting a job here…following a student visa.

Isn’t Fulbright for graduating college seniors and graduate students?

What does it mean “I went to Fulbright” - where is that exactly?

How or why does “Fulbright” advise high schoolers about financial aide?

How does going to Fulbright help you “have a good resume”?

What does that mean?
