S just started a job where he received a starting bonus. He received it with his first check. He had an internship which had a signing/relocation bonus which he had to request after he had been with the job 30 days. If your kid receives a bonus, have them make sure if they will automatically receive the bonus or if they have to fill out paperwork to get it.

I’ve found (with S and our own relocation) that companies tend to pay you a set amount for relocation instead of reimbursing for expenses. Other than the moving company and expenses related to the sale of our house and buying a new one, we received a lump sum and that what both of the companies my S worked for do. We were taxed on our relocation but the company helped us with the taxes. They did not help us with our increased EFC. :(

One thing to remember is that these kids may not get paid right away. S luckily got paid 15 days after he started (gets paid on the 1st and the 15th) but with D’s internship it was almost a month until she got a paycheck that she could live on.
