We could just schedule an appointment for our daughter to see the family dentist on breaks, but we wanted to find a dentist near her college that catered to students, and we really haven’t found any. There are a few dental offices but they are usually out of the way (she will take public transportation for the first few years). She’ll need extended hours because of her full schedule. What else should we look for in the new dentist?
Why haven’t we seen a corporate dental group pop up (like Aspen Dental but better) for students who are out of town? And what if her braces need adjustments?
I will never, ever go to Aspen Dental again. I only went once in an emergency situation. They push the most extensive “treatment plans” on you and then overbill you.
TImely question for me. D broke a bracket on her new braces sometime last week and wont’ be home for another week or so. I told her to call her dentist to find out what to do but haven’t heard back yet. If this has happened in the first three months I assume we’ll need to have a local ortho/dentist to help in emergencies. With this comes also the question about how to care for braces when you study abroad…
Sometimes your local dentist may know someone in the area where your child will be attending school. Recommendations of friends in the area? So far, our kids continue to mostly get care when they’re in town, visiting us. Our ortho did have done names of people he knew in LA, if we were interested. We would also ask friends in the area for recs.
I wonder if the U has a list of healthcare referrals? Maybe ask.
I would ask her professors and any administration folks she knows for a recommendation. They live year round in the area and should be able to suggest someone.
My DD just went to her first dentist appointment at her new college location. We asked some people we know who live in the area and got a great referral that is two minutes from her apartment. Not a clinic…a private practice. They were awesome…even had an introductory rate for new patients. She already has her six month cleaning scheduled for next time.
Ask around. You could start a thread here in the cafe…and ask folks to PM you the names of dentists in the area. This place is a wealth of info!!
Your D is best served by continuing with your family dentist for routine care. In case of an emergency, she can check with her campus health clinic as often they will have dentists in the area that can help with emergencies. She can also ask a professor for a referral.
I am on the call list for our local LAC. I get one or two calls a year, usually for wisdom teeth or chipped tooth.
My terrific dentist is across the street from a college that shows upon CC a lot. Those kids REALLY need to hang curtains in their bathroom windows – the frosted glass doesn’t cut it!
