Finding a good fit for me: College List Help

Hey guys!

I’m very interested in Chemical , Environmental and Bioengineering.
I looking for schools with top engineering programs, but also schools that would provide me the most well-rounded education.
I love math/science, but I love the liberal arts as well.

Do you guys have any schools in mind?

Thanks!

Stats? Home state? Cost Restrictions?

I’m from Delaware.
I attend the best school in the state (top 50 in the nation). A good chunk of students attend top 20 schools.
Male, URM
GPA: 4.0
Class Rank: We don’t rank
SAT: I take them on Saturday…shooting for a 2150-2200
Subject test: I’m taking French, Math II and Chemistry in June.
AP Courses: AP Human Geo (5), AP French, AP Chemistry, AP English Language, AP Environmental Sci
Senior Year Schedule: AP Literature, AP Calc AB, AP Biology, Physics , Advanced French Lit, AP Government, AP Latin
ECs: For privacy reasons, I’m not gonna go into detail. Research is really my biggest extracurricular. I conduct research at my state’s flagship university. I’m also a big humanitarian (started a successful nonprofit sophomore year). I do other things too, but research an humanitarianism are my top two.
Awards: I’ve won awards for research at regional, national and international levels. I’ve placed top 20 on the national french exams. I was recently named one of the nation’s future African-American leaders by a popular magazine.

Right now, I’m looking for a school with great financial aid!
I really like the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. I also like Yale’s School of Engineering.

Are there others you’d suggest? I prefer private institutions, but public schools with generous out-state packages are welcomed as well

Thanks

Do you know about the Meyerhoff Scholars at University of MD, Baltimore County?

Also, of course, Johns Hopkins

This is is USNWR’s rankings of the top undergrad engineering programs.

If you are National Merit Finalist, Univ. of Southern California guarantees you a minimum of half tuttion Presidential Scholarship. And beyond that, you sound like a great candidate for one of their Trustee Scholarships (full tuition) or their Monk Scholarships (tuition and room and board). Be sure and apply next year before Dec. 1 for scholarship consideration.

*Right now, I’m looking for a school with great financial aid!
*

Keep in mind that schools that give “great FA” only give it to those who qualify after the schools look at a family’s income and assets (including any Non-custodial parent’s income/assets).

Most of the top schools only (or mostly) give need-based aid…not merit scholarships.

Have you talked to your parents about how much they’ll pay?

have you run any of the Net Price Calculators to determine what aid you’d qualify for?

the ivies, except for maybe Cornell, aren’t really known for engineering…

Have you looked at MIT?

@BLK616- I’ve thought about Johns Hopkins. What’s Meyerhoff?

@gazoz918- Thanks. Is there any way I can see the full list?

@troikamom- Thanks! I’m not a NMSF, but I should qualify for National Achievement.
I’ll look into USC.

@mom2collegekids- My parents are very involved actually. When my older brother was applying (last year) our income was around $120,000. My parents pay about $11,000 a year for his school fees.
Where can I find a net price calculator?
I’m aware that the ivies aren’t known for their engineering programs, that’s why I’m really having trouble finding a school with exceptional engineering and liberal arts programs. I’ve looked at MIT and Caltech, but I feel that they are extremely math/science oriented (especially Caltech).

take a look at Clemson! We have a fantastic engineering program. Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks guys!
I’ll take a look at Clemson and some of the other schools on this list!!

There are a few LACs with good engineering. Lafayette College in Easton, PA. Bucknell University (small LAC-like U) in Lewisburg, PA. Trinity in Hartford, CT.

Idk if anyone said this before me (only saw that impressive usnews rank thing) but harvey mudd is great.

University of Delaware is one of the best regarded schools for chemical engineering, probably because of a relationship with a nearby major company doing chemical engineering.

Out of state, consider University of Minnesota (Twin Cities), since it is also highly regarded for chemical engineering while it has a relatively low out of state list price.

Note that environmental engineering is often more related to civil engineering than chemical engineering, or is part of the civil engineering department at many schools. Yale is an exception in that environmental engineering is run by its chemical engineering department, but its environmental engineering degree program is not ABET accredited. ABET accreditation is often necessary in environmental or civil engineering, due to the desirability of getting a Professional Engineer license in those fields.

[ABET -](http://www.abet.org) will list what schools are ABET accredited in each engineering subject.

As far as “well rounded education” goes, all engineering degree programs have humanities and social studies breadth requirements in addition to math, science, and engineering major requirements. Big universities have a large selection of such courses that you can use for such breadth requirements, though even small schools with engineering have more such courses that you are likely to realistically take.

Cornell and Johns Hopkins are both well-rounded top schools with strong engineering programs and generous FA.

Also, as much as I dislike Duke (accepted to Carolina, it’s kind of a requirement), they do have a good school of engineering. Also, from what I could gather on the tour/from people I know who go there, their engineers take a much more balanced course of study than at more engineering-focused schools.

I second you look into Harvey Mudd. It is part of the Claremont consortium. You can take classes at one of the other 4 colleges.

Swarthmore is a reach school for anyone, but I encourage you to visit. Meets full need. Close to home so easy to visit. A LAC which would permit the breadth of classes.
