Finding classes outside campus when you can't get into one at your school

What is the best way to go outside the school to get a class if can’t get into it at my school? I have gone to consoler and even emailed engineering go-to staff but get no help. In this case - I need to take ECE Network Analysis 1 #207 but cant get into it - always on wait list for last 3 quarters. Am in electrical engineering and have tried googling class ECE Network Analysis 1 #207 and it always shows up Cal Poly Pomona - which is where I cannot get into that class???

Look on cal Poly website regarding transfer credit. Sometimes college websites list community colleges and which exact classes they will accept outside credit for. Sometimes these classes are online. In some schools, there is a form that u need to take to your dept for sign-off on before taking the class stating that they will accept the outside credit for that particular course.

Just make sure YOUR college will actuallly allow you to apply a course required for your major taken elsewhere. Check that FIRST.

Cal Poly link that may start you in the right direction, but going to the engineering department will also help clarify if that is a class that you can take elsewhere.

I can’t offer suggestions of colleges, but I’d start by talking to your academic advisor or a professor in your department. Find out what, if any, schools your college will accept credit from. Get it in writing that the course has been approved for credit before you sign up for the course at the other school. Sometimes you could be asked to supply a syllabus for the course at the other college so your school can be certain the class covers the same material. In addition be sure you can afford to take the course elsewhere (it may not be covered under the tuition you pay to your college) and be sure you have transportation to and from the other school (leaving ample time to get back to your campus for other classes).

Is it a requirement for your major?
If so, go to you academic advisor first, then prof teaching class and see if they will force add. I’d see them in person not email. Make sure they understand this is keeping you from making progress on your degree - that should get their attention. If that doesn’t work, go to head of Engineering or academic dean again using argument that you can’t get a class you need to graduate… that’s something schools respond to.

CPP has a four year pledge. Did you sign up for it? If so, can you get them to fulfill it by getting you into the courses you need?

Googling the name and class number of that particular class isn’t going to help you find it elsewhere because at another college, it might have a slightly different name and number. I agree with all the others. You have to be a better advocate for yourself and speak to people in person, not by email. Be the squeaky wheel.

Here is CPP’s four year pledge:

Here is CPP’s registration priority:
https://www.cpp.edu/~registrar/registration/current-students.shtml
Note that students in the four year pledge get top priority for their entire schedules.

Students concerned about getting into classes that are commonly full should register as soon as it opens for them.

Another suggestion…understand the registration process thoroughly. Figure out when the school runs a program to delete students from classes they are registered for and no longer have the pre-requisites for. At my son’s school, that’s right after final grades are posted for the semester, and the openings appear about 1am. YMMV of course. Be on line ready to pounce for spots that open for that reason - like someone got a D in the pre-req and needed a C, or they dropped the course entirely. Also at my son’s school, there’s a website (not school run) where you sign up for and specify the particular class you want… the website regularly checks for openings and let’s you know when there is one. It’s up to you to check for message and jump on them immediately, the program can’t register for you. But it’s another way to stalk the class. Check around, many schools have programs like this.

@ucbalumnus for many schools it doesn’t matter how early you register as long as you do it by the deadline. After that deadline, the school registers students based on the # of hours they have. Athletes usually get first crack because they need classes at specific times, then students with the most hours and on down from there. And yes, freshman get the leftovers. Schedules come out before drop/add time and then the real fun starts. Thoroughly understanding the registration process is extremely beneficial in many schools/cases.

I was thinking that the OP should be moving up the line for priority to get into this class.

OP is a student at CPP (Cal Poly Pomona), so the information in #8 that is specific to CPP is relevant to the OP’s situation.
