How do Pre-Health people manage to find extracurriculars and stuff like that?
I feel like u need A LOT of extracurricular stuff just to get into Grad school, and it’s extremely difficult to find it in Michigan because there are simply too many people who try to do the Premed route and stuff…

For the Fall, I’m thinking of either doing a Research project thru UROP or applying to be a volunteer at UM hospital.

For this Summer, I’m trying to find something productive to do and stuff. I want to find a Doctor to shadow, and I’m thinking about just emailing as many as I can and see what happens.

Any other ideas for extracurriculars? It seems like finding ECs is the most difficult part

Do what you like. Your life shouldn’t be about getting into med school, and trust me, doing something you’re passionate about is way more important than being in “Future Doctor Club” (Both on and off the app)

Don’t like anything but med school? Join med-related service organizations.

Yeah, it’s much easier to do that during the Fall or regular year…
But for Spring/Summer, it’s super-hard finding extracurriculars if u haven’t started on it from before already.

I think most people will continue their Research projects that they were already doing from the year before…ECs seem like one of the harder parts to do IMO.
Like, checking what the “right” ECs are and stuff like that

why don’t you get a job?

Med schools don’t want or expect your entire life to revolve around your dream of being a doctor.

If you don’t want/need to work, volunteer someplace. Try soup kitchens, retirement homes, hospitals, animal shelters, etc.

Also, try to stop thinking of everything as an “extracurricular.” Life shouldn’t just be about what looks best on an application. There is no “right extracurricular.” Develop opinions. Do what YOU care about, and make your OWN difference in the community.
