Finding Free Books for kindles?

I’ve been reading through the “What things in life are you uncharacteristically cheap on?” thread. Several people have mentioned borrowing books for their kindles through their libraries. DH and I used to do that, using the “Overdrive” service, but our library recently stopped offered that service and switched to something called “Cloud Library.” The new service doesn’t support the kindle Paperwhite.

I’d love to know some free sources of books for the kindle Paperwhite. Thanks!

Find another library! Here in SoCal, I have cards at 6 different libraries, spanning Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Every time you travel, sign up for a library card!

Right now all use Overdrive so for a popular book, I put on hold at all of them. When I check out the book, I remove the other holds.

Zinio is wonderful too.

Where I live you have to have proof of residence and a reference for a library card. If you live in an unincorporated area you can buy a library card good for one year for between $200 and $600.

I subscribe to the email updates from this site. He also does twitter and Facebook if you prefer those.

@materS yes I showed proof of residence but not one denial and no fee for any of them.

I get some free books for being an Amazon Prime member. You could also pay the $10 per month to get unlimited Kindle reading.

The extra Kindle yearly fee only accesses some Kindle books, not all of them.

You can get some free Kindle books on Amazon without Prime. It takes time to sort through them, but… Just go to Kindle books and ask for a sort from “low to high” price and you’ll see some free books. Granted most aren’t books I’d want to read, but there are a fair number of classics.

If you’re willing to pay for Amazon Prime, it includes the kindle unlimited program which lets you borrow up to 10 books at a time. The books have to be part of the kindle unlimited program though.

Thanks so much for the replies, I’ll be looking into the resources you all shared.

You might also consider a non-Amazon reader…the amount you can save by getting free books from the library quickly justifies a tablet purchase!
