FIL had a big fight with his Second Wife (SW), and and he moved out. FIL has no friends other than MIL and SIL who live together so he’s camped at their place. MIL and SIL are sympathetic but would like him out of their house. SW is in her 70’s and may have some dementia. FIL is in early 80’s and in poor physical condition. Neither have income other than social security. SW does not want FIL back. She is adamant about that.
As I see it, there are at least two things that these people need.
SW needs someone who can do semi-regular welfare checks on her. She does not have a car.
FIL needs a different place to live. He has a car.
Where does someone start with this? How do I find the right social services to direct everyone to?
Do you know any elder law or estate planning lawyers in Miami? Good attorneys are aware of services and social service agencies that can fill their clients’ not-strictly-legal needs.
I don’t know the numbers in Dade county, but they are listed in front of phone book. (How old fashioned that sounds). Is there any religious affiliation? Those groups are often so helpful.
Does SW have any other family that can help take care of her needs? Their medical doctors may be able to suggest things, at least the medical practice may have a social worker that can help.
SW is Roman Catholic. She might be amenable to receiving some help if it is vouched for by a parish that she knows. Thanks for that idea.
FIL and SW have two children who are two decades younger than DH and I, and who have small children of their own to worry about. We are in touch with them, and I gather that step-sisterIL is doing what she can long-distance. Everything that I learn gets passed on to her as well.
