What are the very best schools for fine arts? (including both liberal arts schools with arts programs and exclusively art schools)

My GPA is a 3.4 but I attend one of the top private schools in the country, I’ve taken almost all the art courses available to me, I participate in sports, and I council middle schoolers. What are my chances of getting into an excellent art school? I have a strong portfolio and I’m a rising junior so I have time to improve my grades.

To some extent it depends on whether you are ready to settle on a medium. For example, photography, etc.

LACs - Smith and Scripps (if you are female), Williams, Hamilton, Bowdoin, Conn Coll, Colorado, Skidmore and others depending on medium - you need to investigate more

Universities with strong art dept’s/schools - Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, UVA, Michigan, Brown, WashU, Boston U, NYU, Temple, UPenn, Wesleyan, Brandeis and many state universities

Art schools - here you have to have the money but if you do, lucky you! Again it all depends on the medium…MICA, RISD, SVA, Savannah, Otis, Parsons, Pratt and a personal favorite - unknown gem, Lyme

Thanks momcinco! That’s really helpful

Fine arts is all about the art.

This is my personal opinion about your school search.

A college with an art department is not usually as well resourced as one with a school of art. A school of art can include theater, music, dance and visual arts but a school of visual and fine arts is dedicated to you. Are the professor full time instructors and are they currently producing work professionally. Art is one field where a part time professor may not be a detractor from your classroom learning because the part-timers are also working artists. But part-time teachers can widely vary in their teaching ability. It may just be a way to pay the rent or get healthcare to a few.

A art school is nice but they are all very expensive. They offer scholarships based on your creative portfolio so check them out.

Thanks Madaboutx! Definitely a valid point
