First, a mean date, and then, an accident

One more mom joining in and saying I’m sorry. Hugs to you and your poor kiddo and speedy healing to him.
The mean date… oh, wow. I’m speechless. Someday karma will catch up with her by sending her a mean date.

lmkh- so sorry for your son and your family as you navigate this. The stakes seem high when a college schedule is disrupted, but I have seen it work out with help from the Dean of Students. You can play by ear how to proceed if circumstances change. Have your moments out of his earshot as he is probably quite anxious about how this will unfold and may need encouragement. I have known few kids who got completely through college without illnesses, deaths in the family, accidents, etc. A lot depends on the policies and attitudes of the particular professors, as well as the nature of the courses. Best to all.

Wow, what an awful thing to happen. I hope he heals well and fully. Vent away!

That is really rough. Poor kid! I hope he heals quickly. He is a kid, so he probably will. And that date thing – hope he is able to look back on it and laugh some day. Man, what an insensitive thing to say.

Sorry.
Agree with contacting Dean of Students. My guess is he did meet up with girl for coffee etc before this date, at least girl didn’t soak him for more outings.
Do vent with us :)

Here’s one young adult joining in to agree and convey good wishes to you and your son for what he’s going through.

If there’s a silver lining regarding the mean date, he most likely dodged a bullet as getting into relationships with mean folks of any gender can cause more damage and pain over a longer term.

It’ll get better. Saying this from some first-hand experience. :)

He’s had two unfortunate things happen, close together, both painful, and as a mother, I feel awful for you and your wonderful son. He went to such care to plan a nice date (just not for the right girl). Then he was trying to be helpful (fix the bike) and his test drive turned out so bad for him.

Sometimes bad luck happens in clumps. I sincerely hope for his sake, so does good luck. May he find a nice girl who appreciates him and may all his vehicles (2 and 4 wheeled) not disappoint him. Ever.

I just want to add my voice to the others to say that I am thinking about your son and praying for his speedy recovery.

I bet the accident knocked all thoughts of the bad date out of his mind. He’s got more to worry about now than an immature girl. I guess that’s a silver lining (or maybe just bronze)

I see no problem with you calling the Dean. It’s not as though he can speak! I hope he signed the privacy forms that let them discuss his academics with you. I’m sure you could do that by fax if you have to. I doubt he will want to lose the semester over this. Hopefully a lot of his work is online.

Good luck with this.

I’m so sorry about your son. He sounds like a great guy and deserved so much better than the spoiled brat he took out.
He’ll recover from his injuries and will no doubt have some great stories to tell his friends. calling the Dean of Students is the right way to proceed, so make sure that you do that ASAP- you can even send an email this weekend to get the ball rolling. Does your son have the name and contact info for the RA in his dorm? If so, make that connection too.
Hugs to you and for him! Please keep us posted on his progress.

So sorry to hear this and sending wishes for a quick recovery. Hugs to both of you.

Sounds like a few horrible days. I hope your son’s physical injuries heal soon and that future dates go batter. (This is why I tell my children to share the costs of the first few dates.)

However, let me suggest that you ask your son–in a day or so, when he’s feeling better–how you can help him deal with this, instead of doing it for him. Does he want to send a fax to the Dean of Students? Email his profs?

Those of us who are older than dirt have a tendency to forget how little communication actually requires talking or a physical presence in this technological age. Can your son write with one hand on a tablet? Do his professors post video of lectures on the web? Can one of his friends/dormmate/etc. pick up handouts and scan them for him?

Also, don’t forget to contact his supervisor at his campus job.

lmkh, I just wanted to add my sympathy for you and your son. What a rotten weekend! I hope that his physical injuries heal quickly and that you are able to discuss the rotten date as a learning experience.

Dmd makes a good point: even if you contact the Dean of Students on your son’s behalf while he is recovering from surgery, it would be a good idea to have your son contact the Dean & email professors himself as soon as he is able. At that point, you can step back & guide him. It’s important for him to take charge of his own situation as soon as he is able.

Ugh… tough breaks. Hang in there during this tough week.

I’m so sorry to hear that. Hugs to all of you.

(Random dating advice or men: do not spend a few weeks of salary on a first date. Take her to coffee, ice cream, the museum, lunch, or similar. The nice girls will not mind at all, and her selfish brats will show themselves to be such.)

Tough weekend!

Maybe some learning opportunities?

The mechanical is easy…pay attention guy!

The relationship stuff is harder. Maybe the girl was just not a nice person. Maybe she has poor communication skills. It is hard to talk about but is your son picking up on the social cues? Was there some miscommunication over what this outing was supposed to be? Is he new to dating? We all have to learn and I sometimes cringe recalling my younger self.

I agree with ariesathena. Keep it low key for the first date.

Oh my gosh , what a horrible weekend for your son and your family ! I am so sorry that he was injured and I hope he will be better soon. Vent away !

I’m so sorry for your son. What an terrible weekend. I hope he heals quickly.

The “practice date” comment was, indeed, awful. However, unless she is indeed a horrible person, she probably didn’t mean it to be as awful as it sounded. Maybe at some point during the date she realized that she wasn’t interested in your son, opened her mouth to put the brakes on things, and out came something really, really dumb.

Me too. I remember one date when I said something that sounded not so nice, but I was just a socially awkward person trying to get out of what I thought might become a train wreck. I cringe to this day when I think about what I said and hope the other person has forgotten it!

Oh wow. So sorry on all fronts.

Does your s’s school have an RA as well as the dean of students? Any chance he attends a school with a residential college system and resident faculty to contact? These are all good resources and helped us when our s had surgery and had a rod inserved in his leg after breaking his femur. Had to coordinate a scooter as well as room issues. Hopefully you wont need that, but you may need to arrange food substitutes. Good luck and so sorry!!
