First Car Accident Advice

Just had my first accident. :frowning: I bumped the car in front of me. Thankfully no one was hurt and the damage was minimal. But I still feel terrible and like my life is over. I’m 17 btw. Any advice on how to get over it would be appreciated.

Learn from it. Don’t do again whatever you were doing when it happened.

And then you’ll be fine. :)

I remember when I got my first (only had two thankfully!) ticket. I was 16 and got a ticket for going the wrong way on a one-way street - it was Christmas Eve. I was devastated so I understand how you are feeling.

My son got his first ticket when he was 18. I think it was a blessing in disguise. I believe most of us drive much better after we have a ticket or accident because we realize it CAN happen to us!

The good thing is that no one was hurt. If you were texting or otherwise distracted then hopefully this will be a wake up call! Very few people have not had a bump or two while driving - you will be fine!

Good advice from two good moms. ^^^^^

Accidents happen. If you were at fault by doing something you shouldn’t have (texting?) or weren’t paying as much attention as you should have or if your mirrors weren’t adjusted properly or whatever, learn from it. Your driving will get better with experience. I was in an accident the first time I drove after I got my license. It wasn’t my fault but if I had been a more experienced driver, I might have been able to avoid it. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Expect it to be expensive in terms of future insurance premiums.

But also think about how it happened and how you could have avoided it. If you were following too closely, or going too fast over a hill or around a blind curve, you know what you need to change in your driving habits.

There is a good reason insurance is high for new drivers. The worm had worst accident at end of first year. Like your situation, no one was hurt. Insurance rate did not go up, but he did take a driving class. My g/f had just gotten a ticket, so they went together, and she treated him to lunch. Shortly after, I got my first speeding ticket. By now, the worm is a really good driver. It takes practice to be comfortable and knowledgeable about driving.
