first chance

Hi, this is the first time I’m using this forum to get some feedback from current students and previous students from the University of Chicago.

Simply put, I want to go to U of Chicago because I heard their liberal arts program is terrific, there are many Nobel Prize winners, and the weather is freezing (I love freezing weather).

I want to major in philosophy and creative writing.

My weighted GPA is 4.1, I took 6 AP’s and am taking 3 right now.

SAT = 1920 but i’m planning to take it again soon
SAT II = Math 2c - 740, US history - 680, Korean - 790

Founder of a hip-hop/poetry crew called “The Troubadours”
(cooperating with many known hip hop/creative arts organizations
like Asian Hip Hop Summit and Kollaboration)
Co-Founder of the philosophy club in my high school
Varsity member in the Debate Team (3rd year member)
A member in a youth group Catholic church band for 2 years
A 4 year member in Key Club
Other church services for the poor for about a year
I made a hip-hop mixtape (www.nansea.net/maestrum) with a Troubadour member and you can go to the site to see the artwork and bio.

So far that’s all I can think of, and this profile in its rough form may look pretty weak, but I’m ready for the essay and I think I’ll have a lot of fun with U of Chicago’s essay prompts.

I also wanted to add that I write a lot of poems and I am trying to get some things published in Vagabondpress, an online magazine that comes out monthly.

my online journal is open for viewing soulcolor
You can find my random thoughts, short stories, poems, lyrics, etc.

Also, I’m ranked in the top 5% of my school
Oh and my AP classes
AP calc ab, calc bc (4,4)
AP music theory (3,4)
AP World history (2)
AP US history (4)
AP Spanish (3)

College Classes
Intro to philosophy
(already took)
Philosophy: Comparative Survey in World Religions
(planning to take it starting October 27)

Also I’m going to apply early because I just really want to get into this school.

I don’t know if this matters but, I’ve also exchanged light, informative, and humorous messages with a philosophy professor in the U of Chicago department.

gaaah I keep finding more things to add.
I’m taking AP GOV/econ, AP Literature, and AP environmental science right now.
Sorry :x

What’s your UW GPA? Weighted doesn’t tell us much because every school weights differently.
Your attitude sounds perfect for UChicago – even down to a love of cold weather – now you will need excellent test scores, grades, and essays to get in. Bringing up the SAT scores would be a good idea.

I’m taking the SAT for the 2nd time this saturday and my goal is 2100. My unweighted GPA is 3.64.

If you can bring your critical reading and math score combined up to 1400, then I think you have a good shot. My child, now a third year, had the same gpa as you. When she interviewed, they told her that they liked her but wanted to see at least a 1400 combined on the sections I mentioned. She retook the SATs, got up to the 1400 and was admitted.

Your essays will likely be more of a determiner than will your test scores (though improved test scores won’t hurt). You will need to make the case that you understand what Chicago is and will succeed in that environment, and that you are a student that Chicago faculty would like to have in their courses. This should be reflected in your recommendation letters as well.
