“Meanwhile, Hill’s Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. The recall didn’t involve any other Prescription Diet or Science Diet products, said the company, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co.”

M/D prescription diet from Hill’s (the people who make Science Diet) is a high protein/low carb food for overweight and diabetic cats. There is a high quality alternative – Innova Evo Feline – which is available in independent pet shops. Check with your vet to be sure it’s appropriate for your cat’s situation.

Hmmm. I hope this doesn’t expand to their dry dog food.
Just a few days ago, I just started feeding our three from a bag of science diet adult dry dog food, partly because it was one of the only things left on the shelf at the pet store.

This particular problem seems to be limited to wheat gluten so read your labels. I read labels all yesterday afternoon. There is no wheat gluten in any of the dog and cat foods in my shop.

I’m not partial to SciDi because the first ingredient is generally chicken by-product meal. I am also not happy with the preservatives they use.

My dog was on the recalled wet pouches of Nutro (PetCo) when we were on vacation. The pet sitter called and said that he was really sick with diarrhea, but after 3 days got over it. The Vet said that that had nothing to do with the recalled food. Hope not. Thanks for the heads up on the dry food. I’ve heard that Innova is terrific but don’t see it anywhere around here. I’ll try the internet.

Innova is ONLY sold in independent stores. It’s a real quality food … these guys are one of the few that own their own plant and their production is certified to human standards.

(Independent stores means not in Petcosmartland … although there’s a chain in Michigan that has Innova/Cal Nat.)

Does Innova make dog food too? We have a small pet supply not far from here that sells Canidae, Solid Gold, California Natural, and brands like that. I think I’ve seen Innova, but in the cat food section… ?

Yes … Innova has a dog line. It’s essentially puppy, adult, and senior. Then there is the Innova EVO line … which is the high protein low carb line in a few different formulations. If your store has Cal Nat in dog, they should be able to have Innova dog also … the bags are solid burgundy, kelly green, and royal blue.

MOst of the manufacturers tend to think of their product lines as dog dry primarily, then they have a wet – but generally made in a different plant, and they also have a cat formulation again thinking in terms of dry, but usually a wet also. The dry cat foods generally come in smaller bags and are more nutrient dense (higher protein) and therefore cost more per pound.

This is a link that a friend emailed to me which gives some information on ingredients, and comparisons of various and assorted pet foods. I found it interesting. We feed our dogs Wellness, which was recommended by two vets that we know.
