First Fully Blind Competitor in NACLO... Should I Update Ivies

On one hand NACLO participants are probably a dime a dozen at HYP but I feel I may have opened a door for a lot of people who don’t get many opportunities to compete academically. I’m also pretty proud of my score considering that 2 out of the 8 problems were very visual. I got a 53 out 100 possible points. Last year’s cutoff for second round competitors was 44. Thoughts?

Congratulations on your accomplishment! You are definitely a great role model for other visually impaired students! I think it is worth updating colleges with this achievement. I can’t say if it will make a difference, but it is certainly worth a short email to admissions offices.

Thanks so much. Do you know how to word such an email? I’ve never done it.

Keep the update short and to the point. Introduce yourself, and say something like : “I recently competed at xxx as the first fully blind competitor on February xx. I was proud of my score of xxx which allows me to move onto the next round. Etc.” The admissions officer will likely recognize the competition, but spell it out anyway (don’t just use the acronym). Follow the university’s instructions of how to submit the update. If the school is your first choice, you can mention that, too. Submit the update soon as schools are making admissions decisions now! Good luck!

I am impressed, and they should be also. Nice work!
