first gen student with no idea?

First generation white male from Virginia
WGPA: 4.5/4.6
SAT: 1380/1600, 2050/2400 (780CR, 600M, 670W)
SAT II: 720USH, 700Spanish, 690Lit
Top 7% of my class (would be top 1% if not for my freshman year)

7 APs total (2 junior year, 5 senior year) - USH4, Psych5, Bio, USGov, Spanish Lang, English Lit, Studio Art 2D

All honors courses except math.

I do a lot of generic leadership. I work in a lot of generic clubs. I have some generic awards (best Chemistry and English student in my graduating class) But beside those:

I started a writing center at my high school.

I campaigned and managed a team of volunteers as a precinct captain for the Obama campaign.

I attended my state’s Governor’s Language Academy (Governor’s School) for Mandarin.

My Commonapp essay, as well as supplemental essays, are excellent. Not to toot my horn or anything, but I was really satisfied with them.

My recommendations, I hear, were excellent, but I have not read them.

I’m also the captain of the academic team. We are district champions. Regionals are soon.

I took courses at my local community college and received As in both (Philosophy and Filmmaking).

I received an American Voices and Visions/Gold key and a silver key for two pieces I submitted to Scholastics Art & Writing.

I got into UNC OOS, if that helps?

Some schools I have applied to (don’t worry if my list is too many reaches, I already got into my safeties, which I’m in love with, and UNC):

Rice
Duke
UChicago (deferred EA)
Georgetown
UVA
Brown
Cornell
WashU at St. Louis

Thanks for your time!!!

Any ideas?

(I went to Gov. School for Russian =D)

Sounds pretty impressive to me, I feel like I’m lacking compared to you. xD (First Gen. Female Virginian)

Your ECs sound awesome, and some of them are definitely impressive. I think you have a good shot, personally, but there’s a lot of competition for college this year…

I’m worried about my applications next year…

Anyway, I think you’ll get into a good college, but I’m not sure how competitive the ones you’ve chosen are, so I can’t really give an accurate prediction. Best of luck, though, fellow Virginian. =3

Being a first gen student really helps, and that’s just added on to the fact that you seem to be a really good student, because getting into UNC OOS is not a small feat. GPA is good, and so are your EC’s, but the SAT might be in the lower ranges for some of those self-proclaimed reach schools, but again, you have that really good hook. That being said,

Rice- Low reach
Duke- Low reach
UChicago- If your essays really are stellar, then high match
Georgetown- Match
UVA- Match
Brown- Low reach
Cornell- Low reach
WashU at St. Louis- Low reach

You will probably get into at least half of those, good luck!

Hmm… you are probably either a match or a low reach for all of these schools… you’ll get into probably half.

Thanks for the chances. Any other thoughts?

Any ideas?
