<p>It means your parents (and their parents etc) didn’t go to college. They usually see you as more ambitious that way, overcoming the obstacles that prevented your parents from going (and possibly overcoming unsupportive parents). I think a college would want to help that kind of person and encourage them to go to college.</p>
