First Impression

We know the adage. First impressions last.

Do first impressions last with you? Or are your impressions plastic - malleable?

Haha sorry if I disappointed anyone expecting an essay about first impressions :p. I could write one, but I’ll save that for later :).

Subconsciously, first impressions are important. But when seriously examined, first impressions should not be important. Is this your point?

I can think of at least one example in my life. Hm …

Oh yes. YES. First impressions are like my thing. I might even be the most judgmental person that you’ll ever meet. If I don’t like someone the first time I see(and unfortunately, I don’t like many people), I’ll probably never talk to him/her. First impressions tend to stick with me for a very long time. I remember almost everyone’s first impression.

This is completely understandable. I am also quick to judge, and I tend to hold on to these (mis)conceptions.

But now that I’ve mulled over it, I can distinctly remember two examples of which my first impressions were significantly modified by further encounters and interactions. Both impressions were changed for the better :).

Interesting thread… First impressions are important obviously for the subconscious, as has been stated above. However, intuition plays a large role. Usually someone with a stronger intuition also mentally solidifies said memory of the encounter than someone without a strong intuition, whose mind leaves the moment in a fluid state. That is my educated guess but of course I can be wrong. People usually are wrong. First impressions don’t go very far in our realm (I assume we are young adults, not fully mature) as teenagers will change eventually and when the meeting is replayed again later in life, the initial moment will undeniably and unfortunately sway our opinion. Sadly, our memory will distort the possible changes of character that person has undergone. Fortunately our brain can process the changes necessary to resort back to a clean or altered state of mind.
