Hey guys,
I have a couple of questions about the essay
- How can I shorten an essay in general, my essay is like 5 lines too long
- Is the Scarlet Letter a trite example?
- Did I answer the prompt? In my view, I almost saw the question as asking what your definition of a hero is. Did I take a clear enough stance? Is my thesis clear?
- Finally, if you could just grade my essay on 1-12 scale and any other comments are appreciated.

Topic: Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it?

Susan Plyte once said, “Courage is our ability to go against society, even when everyone around us tells us not to do so.” Heroes have existed throughout the course of history with one common characteristic, bravery. These heroes have always stood up for what they believed in, no matter the consequences. Heroes are the people who challenge society’s norms and limits. A myriad of modern, literary, an historical examples substantiate this concept.
Liz Murray, the author of the autobiography From Homeless to Harvard, serves as a compelling illustration that heroes are the people break societal bounds. Liz Murray had an extremely troubling childhood with both of her parents squandering their money on drugs. Murray explained in an interview with the New York Times that she would often eat toothpaste for dinner. Consequently, she suffered drastically in school, and she was written off as a failure. Her future looked bleak. However, after her mother died from an overdose, she became inspired to do well in school and eventually earned a scholarship at the prestigious Harvard University. She became a hero in her home town and around the country. Therefore, Murray had challenged society’s norms and became a hero.
The protagonist in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne, additionally exemplifies that heroes are those who redefine the limits society puts on individuals. In the novel, Prynne commits adultery and is forced to wear a scarlet “A” on her dress. She was ridiculed; however, instead of being written off by society, she embraced her future and dedicated her life to service of others. Eventually, the “A’ was seen as representing “Able”, and she became a hero amongst the community. Thus, Hester Prynne became a hero through her tenacious work which eventually altered the view of the letter “A’ and of herself.
Marie Curie, a female scientist in the twentieth century, finally demonstrates the qualities of a true hero. Born in Poland, Curie had an academic proclivity to science ever since she was a child, but society at the time had limited her dreams. She was denied admission to Warsaw University because her gender and had to attend an underground university. She later pursued her interest in research, although she was met with several criticisms. With her husband, she pioneered the field of atomic physics and received a Nobel Prize for her efforts. Consequently, she earned veneration for her actions and became an idol for women around the world. Hence, through her resolute determination, Marie Curie challenged society’s view on women and became a hero.
As the previous examples from Liz Murray, The Scarlet Letter, and Marie Curie have shown, heroes are the people who test and break society’s limits. True heroes are those who lead the way for others by breaking the shackles that society so unfairly restricts us in. These heroes will always have a place in our mystifying and complex world, forever changing humanity.
