So I’m going to school at the University if Nevada at Reno and I screwed up. I had four courses: Chinese (4 credits), criminal justice (3 credits), computer science (3 credits) and a combo math class (126 for 3 credits and a 096 review component for 2 credits). I got B’s in Chinese, CJ and CS but I screwed up on my final and ended up with a D in math (though w/ the review component I got a “satisfactory”). So, how bad did I screw myself?

That puts you at about a 2.54 total GPA, right? That’s certainly not a good foundation to start building your degree on, but it’s definitely salvageable. Are you in a major that involves a lot of math? What is Math 126 (college algebra, trigonometry, etc.)? If you need to go further in math, then you’ll likely need to retake this course. It varies from school to school, but typically if you retake a class, the lower grade gets wiped out and replaced with the new grade. So you could potentially get that D off your transcript and replace it with a better grade. This is something that you’ll need to discuss with an adviser.

Remember that you still have 7 semesters of courses left. There’s a lot of time to raise your GPA up even aside from retaking that class. Spend some time thinking about what you were doing wrong that caused you to do poorly. You can take those insights and use them to correct your study methods etc. for next semester. Utilize resources. Study groups can be great. Get a tutor if need be.
