First Semester in the Books

To parents of freshman students - how was first semester at college?

D had a great semester. She has a roommate who is like a long-lost sister, some good friends, is in a tiny program at her school so is on a first-name basis with the department head, loves her major classes, likes most things about her school (not the food, though) and the location. She finished with a 3.7, an A- in her school, and can’t wait to see what next semester has to offer. She’s glad to be home but ready to start getting ready to go back. She is 100% sure that graduating early, majoring in special ed and going to an HBCU was exactly the right thing for her to do.

D did great. Within a couple of months she had a friend group with similar interests and food preferences. Struggled with a couple of teachers and a very demanding last-minute add-on 1 credit class–ended up with B’s in those, A’s in everything else.

She is happy where she is. Town not great, food not great, however her college is excellent in her areas of interest & has excellent offerings in study abroad which is a big goal for her. Also offered excellent FinAid, both need and merit based, which was essential.

This school was originally her #2 but as application season progressed it moved up to tie with #1. She was actually somewhat relieved when she did not get accepted to #1 and did not have to make a choice.
