First Semester Trouble

I’m a first semester freshman and my GPA isn’t looking so hot. I’ve had a rough semester because of a close family member slowly dying of cancer and my grades are not as good as I know they could be.

I REALLY want to be in the honors college, which means a 3.5 GPA. I’m thinking about dropping all my classes except for the couple that would get me the GPA I want. It would only be 4 credit hours. Do I go on academic probation for only completing 4 hours?

Is this possible?
Don’t worry about money, while it is certainly a factor, I’ll worry about it after I know if this is a possibility.

It is unlikely that someone not making satisfactory academic progress would be admitted to an Honors College. Or perhaps the Honors college only takes full time students, which you would not be. But you could ask an honors advisor these questions.

Agreeing with @CheddarcheeseMN. Also, dropping down to 4 hours could make you a part-time student, which could have other implications. Go talk to your advisor, stat. And decide what you mean by really: is it mathematically plausible that you could get your GPA up to 3.5 before the end of term? if so, do you really want it badly enough to do the work it will take to get there? With serious illness in your family, should you take a leave of absence / incompletes and come back when you are able to do justice to your schoolwork? Again, talk to your advisor.

I think for most schools one needs 12 credits to be considered a full time student. My kids’ school had different GPA requirements depending on number of credits taken. In another word, one would need higher GPA with fewer credits taken. Every school is different, but I highly doubt your school would consider you for honors with just 4 credits.

What will your GPA be if you don’t drop any classes?

Dropping down to four credits would seriously set you back a whole semester for the most part. Also, any financial aid that you have recieved would most likely be taken away. Most schools require you to be taking at least 12 credits to receive financial aid.

Go talk to your dean of students ASAP and explain what is going on. or talk to your adviser. and your parents.

Like others say…there are implications (and loss of $$) if you are not full time. Maybe withdrawing from one class will free up time for you do well in the others.
