First time buying my own laptop (thinkpad x200 tablet?)

I’ve had laptops before (have one now) but it’s always been a gift from some ridiculously wealthy extended family member. Without them I’d probably never have afforded one myself. Well, now I have more than a $1000 in my bank (from work) and I plan to work over the summer to double that amount. At the end I want to buy my own laptop instead of going to college with another bought one (I have too much pride, it’s always bothered me taking these charities from my moms’ wealthy brother, going to college I’m determined to do as much as possible on my own money-wise).

Pointless story over, is $1750 too much to pay for a laptop? I’m an engineering major and very hard on my stuff so I figure a thinkpad is good, then I like the webcam so I can talk with my family back home and the tablet sounds cool since I’ve never had one but always wished I did.

If ya’ll think that’s too much then what else is good and durable with a webcam and can handle engineering work for 3-5 years? The tablet is cool but I guess I can do without.

I have a friend who has the x200 tablet. He’s a math major and loves the tablet. He says hes like to keep his notes on a computer but finds it slow typing equations, so the tablet is very useful. Also, with a tablet, all your notes can be stored in a cpu, making it easy to organize and store, in comparison to heavy full binders of paper notes. I’d say it is worth the extra cash
