Friends and I were talking about one’s decision to take the plunge and purchase a home. She asked us about a few ads, including one for a small cottage type in-town home that stated that the house had “roommate plan” bedrooms. What?? I never heard of such a thing. What is it?

I haven’t heard the term, but I think it might refer to a house that has bedrooms of similar size, unlike the more common house layout that has one extremely large bedroom (clearly intended for two people and usually occupied by a married couple) and two or more small bedrooms (clearly intended for one person each and usually occupied by children).

As elderly people, my divorced father and his never-married sister shared a townhouse because it was cheaper for both of them than living in separate apartments and because it enabled them to help each other out when health problems or other difficulties arose. The two of them were, for all practical purposes, roommates (for about 20 years!). Although their home was quite nice in many respects, the layout of the bedrooms (1 very large double bedroom, 2 very small single bedrooms) never worked out well for their purposes. If there had been a house available with 2 medium-sized bedrooms instead of one giant one and two tiny ones, they would have jumped at it.

I read an article recently where this term was used and it was the first time I had seen it. In that article, it referred to bedrooms of equal size, each with an ensuite bathroom.

My apartment a hundred years ago was said to be a good roommate plan. While there was a master with ensuite bathroom and a second bedroom with a hall bath, the living room was between the rooms so that the bedroom didn’t share a common wall. Boy was I happy about that as my roommate ask if her boyfriend could stay over sometimes. Yeah, he stayed over occasionally; he was there from Friday-Friday, only leaving to visit his parents!!!

My d’s rental condo was called a roommate plan. Two bedrooms. Each on opposite sides of the living room. Each the same size with their own private bath.

one of my favorite real estate terms is " peek a boo view".
By which they mean if you are 6’ tall & jump up and down while looking out the window you may catch a glimpse of something * not unattractive* ;)
