I go to a nearby public school where most students end up attending nearby state institutions.
Grade: Senior
Unweighted GPA: 3.0
Weighted GPA: Currently not available.
Academic Rigor: My school offers little to no rigorous courses. However, I took IB English and History my junior year.
Senior Load: I’m dual enrolled. College classes include economics, health and sociology. At school I’m taking IB English, IB Science and regular math. <— Getting nothing less than an A- in these classes to submit for midyear report and admission review
ACT: 27
Extracurricular & volunteer work.
School:
I am the president of my schools GSA (Gay Straight Alliance)
I am actively involved in another club that relates to adolescent sexual health. I help coordinate our annual sexual health carnival at my school.
Outside of School:
Planned Parenthood (Clinic) : lobby, office work, help organize events, table, community outreach, canvass, phone-bank, patient escort (really scary position cause of protesters)
American Civil Liberties Union (Law Firm): intern, help organize events, table and register, office work.
OutFront Minnesota (LGBT organization): table and register at events, lobby, did a 40 hour training for anti-violence program
Human Rights Campaign: Lobby, and volunteer at various events to help out with whatever needs to be done.
Background: Male, Somali immigrant, first generation, working class family.
Awards:
GSA won annual award Outstanding Teens of the Year for a local non profit
Was featured on the news publications regarding my volunteer work with the ACLU
Keynote speaker at fancy fundraising event for the ACLU
A and B Honor Rolls
Other cool things:
Did a college preparatory program at Carleton College
Got to have an exclusive breakfast with a famous Texas politician named Wendy Davis (Planned Parenthood)
Extenuating circumstances: I left the country for two years and returned late October Freshman year. Enrolled in a nearby school and switched out in early December cause we moved. Due to moving and enrolling issues I did not start school until late January. I was out of school for nearly two months. I again had to move my junior year towards the end of my semester and the principal essentially forced me to stay in school for fear of my GPA dropping if I switched schools in the middle of the year. I lived 40 minutes away and experienced difficulties attending school due to transportation issues. All in all my education was interrupted various times and negatively effected my GPA.
