First Time Taking The PSAT. Don't Know How To Interpret Score!

I took the PSAT in October 2010 and I am a sophomore who will graduate in 2013. This was my first time taking the PSAT so I don’t know how to interpret my score.
Critical Reading: 50 *Better than 74% of all sophomores, Better than 75% of all sophomores in state
Mathematics: 69 *Better than 98% of all sophomores
Writing: 61 *Better than 95% of all sophomores
Total: 180
My selection index is 87, but I don’t know what that means.
If I apply to prep schools such as the Webb Schools in California or the United World Colleges, do you think that this score would be bad?

PSAT scores are predictions for your SAT scores. add a zero to the end of each score, including your cumulative. Right now, your projected score is 1800. You can easily bring that up. Work on that critical reading, for sure. You really do not want to dip below a 50/0 for any section on the P/SAT.

Your selection index is basically a determiner of whether or not you qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition. If there’s an asterisk beside the number, you do. If not and you’re black or Hispanic, it may not matter. It didn’t for me; I became a National Achievement Semifinalist.

I know nothing about those schools. I can’t help you there, my apologies.

add two zeros to the end of your score thats your predicted sat score

Daydream, are you sure about the * meaning you do qualify? My dd does not have an asterisk next to her selection index of 215. On the other side of her score sheet it says an asterisk next to your selection index score means you do not meet requirements to enter NMSC competitions.

An asterisk means that the requirements for NMSC have not been met. Since the OP is a sophomore, there is no eligibility, so it is possible that an asterisk would appear no matter the score in this case.

^hahaha,two,it is one zero

mominwestlake -daydream is absolutely correct. your dd is qualified to enter NMSC. No astrisk = qualified It also depends upon which state you are in as each state has their own cut off score.

The sophomore will have an astrisk no matter what the score.

There are different requirements for National Achievement.
