First Trip to Wegmans

I am making an hours trip to go to Wegmans. For you shoppers that go there what would you suggest I buy?

We only visit for lunch when on our way somewhere as it is about 45 minutes for us.
I’d plan on grazing the food court for sure!

Lucky you if it’s one of the newer, full-service stores. I suggest the olive bar, cheese shop, and hot entree bar (I like the bruschetta chicken thighs and some of the hot veggie dishes). My kids don’t live in close proximity to a Wegmans, and they always like it when I bring them a bottle of Wegmans raspberry balsamic salad dressing and also some of the Wegmans marinades. Happy shopping!

Second the food court. If they have a carving station, I highly recommend it. The roast beef on a weck is fantastic.

I usually don’t necessarily go to Wegmans for specific things that aren’t carried other places. Rather, I find that the prices are generally reasonable and it’s just a pleasant place to shop where the store is well-stocked and maintained, and the workers are friendly. (Also my friends who work there love it.) My MIL loves it because they carry all sorts of organic produce and groceries.

Oh, and I love the olive bar.

Bread. Any of the fresh baked bread from the bakery. Mmmmmm…

A carving station?! Wow, we are SO behind in our grocery experiences here…

Maybe the local Wegmans near me has a bad food court. Everyone always raves about it (not the one local to me, but the one local to them) but I’ve never had a good experience there.

That said, it has great fruit and veggies as well as meat and fish, and a decent bakery. I like the old grain bread baked in the store. I second the olive bar as well as the cheese shop. D likes the Wegmans raspberry jam. It also has a nice selection of organic groceries and gluten-free stuff.

I am not impressed with anything in Wegmans beyond the food court.

Grab a jar of spiedies meat marinade. It’s the New York State State Fair marinade and it is great. We marinate chunks of beef and the skewer it with onions mushrooms tomatoes and peppers and toss it on the grill. Delicious!!!

Go for the bulk packages of vacuum-sealed steaks such as sirloin, or bulk non-vacuum sealed ground beef. The former can be had for dollars-off per pound cheaper than those packaged in smaller units and it’s great-quality; the latter they usually have a bulk deal on some sort of ground beef at any given time. Break it up into 1-2 lb units at home, freeze and save big! I also load up on Wegman’s brand toilet paper. I’d have to do a sale+coupon at my local supermarkets/drugstores to achieve the same savings as Wegman’s normal price for their store brand, plus it’s decent quality. These two kinds of purchases are what usually lures me in to the store once a month and then I shop around for other stuff, like fresh-baked goods, roasted chickens, the specials of the week on produce, etc. Their egg prices are also generally good but not worth making a special trip, but might as well if you’re there anyway.

I’m the opposite of many here. I don’t think the food court items are that special. The sushi is the best choice there. The Asian buffet is expensive and not that great. What I love at Wegman’s is all the store brand grocery items. I’ve never been unhappy with a Wegman’s brand product, and they are considerably less expensive. Our pets are happy and healthy eating Wegman’s pet food for years. The deli and produce are great. They do a good job training their staff to be helpful and pleasant and they keep the checkouts moving. By far my favorite grocery store.

The few people I know that shop there, so love their brand items. I will report back when I get back!

Bakery Bakery Bakery Bakery!!!

I have not even heard of this store - what part of the country is it located in?

Their pre marinated packaged meat (chicken and steak) is godsend. I absolutely love the teriyaki steak tips and mojo chicken… Wegmans meets are pretty much the only meat we eat.

I second the packaged marinated meat. We live on the lemon and garlic chicken breasts. I am also partial to Wegmans’ brand parmesan Italian salad dressing. Also, yes to the speidie marinade. We eat it traditional upstate NY style, grilled chunks of marinated chicken served on Italian bread.

sax - As a Binghamton-area native I appreciate the plug for spiedies. The state fair stuff is Salamida’s, which I find a little vinegar-y for my taste. I recommend Lupo’s marinade but I couldn’t say if Wegmans carries it. There’s a big Salamida’s/Lupo’s rivalry and it’s clear where my loyalties lie.

lammb66 - Wegmans started in Rochester and is located I think primarily in the mid-Atlantic region.

I do agree with others that the Asian Wokery isn’t that spectacular. Their subs are a good deal though and some of the more specialty food items are really good. Big station of yummy soups, for instance. Wegmans brands are generally really good (except I hate the store brand jarred alfredo).

My D just graduated from Penn State and did all of her shopping at Wegmans. She is a vegetarian and apparently they have a great selection of items along those lines. We do not have Wegmans in Calif. - I had never heard of it before- and she is going through definite withdrawals. I have to say, I really did love it when I ventured in on a couple of trips. Kind of like a regular grocery store with a Whole Foods thrown in the middle of it.

Wow … I thought the “Gucci” Kroger in our area was a big deal!

So does Wegmans still do the Friday night take out fish fry?

This was an absolute must when we visited Rochester. At that time they used Haddock but its soooo expensive now.

It was so goooood!!!

We grew up in Rochester and my brother worked for Wegmans as a high schooler back in 1970. They were just another market at that time.
